October 10, 2023Tangerang – Opportunities for the Data Engineering profession continue to open wide as technology proliferates. Besides being sought after by many companies, this profession also holds essential control in the process of processing data. Data science and Big Data are the main keys for a Data Engineer to carry out his duties and responsibilities.
Through a Live Session held online on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Elkan Jeremy, as the resource person, invited the participants to get to know the Data Engineering profession and the skills needed. Designing, creating, building, and maintaining data channels, collecting raw data from various sources, and ensuring performance optimization are some of the important roles of Data Engineers in the data industry.
“Various types of data originating from primary and secondary sources will continue to grow rapidly daily. Therefore, the industry needs a Cloud to accommodate the data. This is where the data engineer comes in,” said Elkan.
Speaking of data engineers, several things need to be understood so that their duties and responsibilities can be carried out properly, one of which is understanding the characteristics of big data. These characteristics are volume, velocity, variety, veracity, and value. After that, the data engineer will run a process called Extract, Transform, and Load or ETL.
Every profession requires different skills and competencies. As with data engineers, Elkan said several specific skills need to be mastered, namely coding and data warehouses, using database tools, cloud computing, and understanding machine learning.
“There are several programming languages commonly used for coding, such as Java, C+, Python, and R. Cloud computing is fundamental because it is the delivery of computing services, including servers, storage, databases, networks, software, analysis, and intelligence over the Internet,” Elkan said.
According to Elkan, participants can come from an IT or NON-IT background to become a data engineer. However, he said three things must be done to improve existing competencies and skills: observing, imitating, and doing.
Observing means looking for data engineer jobs and the requirements needed by the company. Secondly, imitate, which means learning or course the skillset in the job requirements online. Finally, build a data portfolio from the knowledge that has been learned.
Big data and Data Science are the necessary knowledge for a career in the data industry. Beginners without an IT background don’t need to worry, train competencies, and hone data engineer skills more easily with DQLab. For more complete information, visit the following link: https://dqlab.id/.
