5 Strategic Communications Job Prospects
September 6, 2022Informatics Major Skills You Should Know
September 9, 2022For design students, Nirmana is a kind of mathematics major in Engineering. This course has become one of the most feared by design students.
Nirmana is an introductory course that DKV students must take. And usually, this course will be studied in the first semester of lectures. Then, what is nirmana? How important is it for DKV children to learn nirmana? Well, for those interested in majoring in Visual Communication Design, let’s get to know nirmana from now on!

What is Nirmana?
Nirmana is often called a fine arts science. The presence of nirmana has a significant influence on a design. The origin of the word Nirmana itself is a combination of two words: “nir,” which means without or not, and “mana,” which means form, meaning, or meaning. So nirmana is something that initially has no form/meaning, then it can be processed into a work of art by processing visual elements based on its principles and principles.
In addition, some interpret nirmana as the result of imagination in 3D and 2D forms with beauty values. The procedures and elements of processing the work are packaged through a more organized and detailed hierarchy so that nirmana can be made for two-dimensional and three-dimensional works of art.

Why Should You Study Nirmana?
Nirmana is the foundation for DKV students. Therefore it is essential to understand it in detail. Maybe when you first learn nirmana, you will think, “what is the essence of learning to make colors and lines like this?”. The impact will only be felt when you enter the world of work, especially if you are still on the creative industry path.
Studying nirmana can help you understand the layout mix of visual elements – such as points, plane lines, colors, and so on – and their function in producing work. Studying these elements can increase your sensitivity and sensitivity to design. Not only that but the principles of art will also be honed if you learn nirmana, ranging from lighting (color gradations) and the use of shapes to creating works in 3D or tridimensional forms.
As a result, studying nirmana can train creativity, provide innovation in arranging visual elements by applying design principles, and improve your artistic taste. Plus, later art you produce will have a high aesthetic value.
Types of Nirmana You Need to Know
As previously mentioned, nirmana is two different types of space. The two areas are:
Nirmana Dwimatra
Dwimatra or 2D (Two dimensions), meaning nirmana dwimatra, elements and design principles intended for works with 2D space. In the nirmana dwimatra, the regulations are used to compose beautiful pieces and to arrange the wimba (image) system, which acts as an expression of meaning or conveys a message.
Nirmana Trimatra
Nirmana trimatra or 3D (Three Dimensions) are design elements and principles intended for works with 3D space. The contents of the features and regulations are almost the same as the bimatra version, but this space has more dimensions, so there are a few additions. And the extra is adjusted to the more sizes in the 3D area.

Important Elements of Nirmana
Nirmana consists of several elements designed to create a beautiful whole or according to the desired effect. In actual design and production, it’s hard to see these different elements in isolation. Because these elements are abstract before being assembled into a work/design, understanding and seeing the components separately from the unity will give us a better experience of the principle and the principle of its application. These elements are:
1. Point
The point can give birth to a form of ideas, which will then give birth to a line, shape, or field. Pointillism is a painting technique that uses a combination of dots of various sizes and colors.
2. Line
The formation of a line from the most miniature set of units is usually a circular point. A line is a point that extends. Therefore a bar is more characterized by its length than its width. The line is the initial dimension created from the point that is moved in such a way.
3. Field
The plane is a flat shape without thickness, has dimensions of length, width, and area, has a position direction, and is limited by a line. The shape of the plane can be geometric, organic, angular, irregular, or round.
4. Texture/Bark
The tactile value of a surface, both natural and pseudo, can be smooth, rough, slippery, and so on. Based on its relationship with the sense of sight, texture can be divided into two: actual texture and pseudo texture.
5. Color
Without light, there would be no color because color is the impression that light gives the eye. Each shade is created by the reaction of white light hitting a surface, reflecting part of the spectrum. The appearance of these colors is due to the isolation of white light. The most straightforward system for determining color relationships is the arrangement of colors in the form of a color wheel.

Basic Principles of Making Nirmana
1. Unity (Unity)
Unity is one of the most important design principles. If a work of art lacks units, it becomes scattered and chaotic, making it difficult to see. This principle is the relationship principle. Unity is achieved when one or more related visual elements (color, shape, orientation, etc.).
2. Balance (Balance)
Artwork and design should be balanced, pleasing to the eye, and not intimidating. Like seeing a tree or building about to fall, we tend to feel uncomfortable and restless. Equilibrium is the state experienced by an object when all the forces acting on it cancel each other out. In art, this balance is immeasurable but visible, a form in which all parts of the work do not overlap.
3. Proportion
Proportion covers the basic principles of visual design to achieve harmony in your work. For that, we need a proper comparison. A ratio is a mathematical comparison in the field. The Golden Ratio is today’s most famous proportion in architectural works of art. This ratio uses the Fibonacci sequence with a balance of 1:1.618, and often, 8:13 is also used. This ratio is said to be a comparison found in natural objects, such as the size structure of the human body, and is therefore believed to be a ratio revealed by God Himself. In the design area, this ratio is reflected in comparing paper size and page layout.
4. Rhythm (Rhythm)
Rhythm is a regular and continuous repetition of motion. In natural forms, examples of duplication of activity in sea waves, rows of ants, movement of leaves, and so on can be taken. The principle of rhythm is the relationship of repetition of the forms of the visual elements.
5. Domination
Domination is one of the basic principles in artwork and design. Dominance comes from the word dominance which means superiority. This superior and unique quality makes the element a magnet and the center of attention. In the world of design, dominance is the center of attention. Focal points and eye-catchers are often called Domination has many purposes. It means attracting attention, eliminating boredom, and disturbing order.
Tips for Making Nirmana
Prioritize Exploration of Ideas Instead of References
Believe that you are creative and have thousands of ideas that others may not think of. Because if you look directly at the reference from the beginning, it will significantly limit your creativity not to be far from the connection. Experiment with your skills first, test your imagination to see how far you will get stuck, and then look at the links. There are many Nirmana references on the internet, from bad to extraordinary ones.
1. Get Rid of Fear
To produce great work, you must have the courage to step out of your comfort zone, clear doubts quickly, and create pieces with unusual concepts that others may not have thought of. Remember, there are no limits to your creativity!
2. Create a Variety of Different Works
Practice makes perfect is the proper term for this one tip. Creating more choices will train your creativity and technique when working on Nirmana. Not only that, but you also have many options to get the best job. If you do three positions, then the 4th can be more fantastic.
3. Neatness is key!
Does anyone feel Nirmana’s work is like a kindergarten student? Yes, if you think so, it’s because your work is not clean, then from now on, work more carefully and carefully when working on nirmana because cleanliness is the key. Your job may be very mundane, but if it’s clean, professors may hesitate to give you a bad grade.
4. Stay away from the Overnight System.
Well, this is the habit of most of us, but it’s the deadliest mistake. You’re making a big mistake if you think inspiration and enthusiasm always have a deadline. Good nirmana is not achieved in a few hours, so change your mindset. Even nirmana can take more than 12 hours to work. Do not let nirmana interfere with your health.
Well, that explains what nirmana is and tips for making it. For those planning to major in Visual Communication Design, it’s a good idea to start getting familiar with nirmana. Ensure you’ve read enough information so the lectures will be better prepared later.
