Whereas in the past, college was only accessible through physical presence on campus, today, one can pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree without having to be on campus.

Definition of Distance Learning

Distance learning, also known as online learning or e-learning, is a learning method where students can access and follow academic courses online. In distance learning, students do not need to be physically present in class but can access learning materials, participate in online discussions, and submit assignments through the e-learning platform. Students and lecturers interact virtually through discussion forums, video conferencing, or other online communication tools.

Many universities have also implemented this education system. There are even universities that are entirely online without a physical campus. Some of these universities will tend to have more affordable and flexible tuition fees for their working students.

Types of Distance Learning

1. Synchronous learning

In this type of learning, students must attend lectures in person according to the schedule set by the university. Students will connect with lecturers and fellow students simultaneously through virtual platforms such as video conferencing. The real-time interaction allows for direct questions and discussions between participants and lecturers.

2. Asynchronous learning

Students can access learning materials and assignments at any time according to their time availability. Usually, asynchronous learning is based on a website or application that students use to access learning materials, assignments, and videos. However, this type of learning has no real-time interaction with lecturers or fellow students. Communication can only be done through online forums or email. This type of distance learning provides greater time flexibility to students.

3. Hybrid learning

Hybrid learning combines elements of online and face-to-face lectures. Students can attend scheduled face-to-face lectures on campus while accessing online materials and interactions. This approach utilizes technology to enrich students’ learning experiences.
