TANGERANG – Two students from UMN’s Hotel Operations won several awards in the international culinary and pastry competition titled “The 19th Battle of the Chef 2024” on June 26-June 29, 2024, at Spice Arena, Penang, Malaysia.
The 19th Battle of the Chef 2024 is an international culinary and pastry competition organized by the Penang Chef Association and supported by the World of Chef Societies (WACS). Participants are divided into several categories, namely Young Chef (16-22 years old) and Professional Chef (above 22 years old).

UMN’s Hotel Operations representatives, Connie Brahmana, a Hotel Operations UMN 2022 student, and Bryan Nicolas, a Hotel Operations UMN 2023 student, competed with more than 1,200 local and international chefs from 10 countries worldwide. At least 65 competition categories exist in “The 19th Battle of the Chef 2024.”
In this prestigious competition, Connie received a Bronze Medal for the “GH 22 Ghee Hiang Modern Asian Cuisine – Team of 2 Chefs” category, a Diploma Award for the “GH 18 Hot Pasta Dish Challenge” category, and a Bronze Medal for the “GH 13 Main Course Beef” category.
Meanwhile, Bryan received a Bronze Medal for the “GH 22 Ghee Hiang Modern Asian Cuisine – Team of 2 Chefs” category and a Diploma Award for the “GH 18 Hot Pasta Dish Challenge” category.
Chairperson of UMN’s Hospitality Study Program Oqke Prawira, SST.Par., M.Si.Par. said this competition was quite tense. The reason is that this is the first international competition attended by UMN’s Hotel Operations.
Oqke said participants faced various challenges in the “The 19th Battle of the Chef 2024” competition. One of them is the perception and expectations of the judges, which may differ from the rule book that has been given. This impacts the lack of time for the UMN Hotel Operations team to modify the menus that will be included in this competition.
However, UMN Hotel Operations can still show its readiness in the international arena. This is also inseparable from the learning curriculum at UMN Hotel Operations.
“UMN’s Hotel Operations curriculum supports students in participating in competitions, both at the national and international levels. Because, in addition to the material obtained in class, students who will take part in the competition must do intensive training in preparation for the competition,” Oqke explained.
