A student of the Strategic Communication Department, Faculty of Communication Science, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), Christopher Edbert Setiabudi, managed to get 17th place in the World Karate Federation (WKF) World Championship in Venice, Italy, which was held on Wednesday (09/10/2024) to Tuesday (15/10/2024).
Before competing in the WKF event, Christo had participated in the National Karate Championship, then participated in the South East Asian Karate Federation (SEAKF) event, even managed to qualify for the Indonesian National Team (Timnas) and was sent to the WKF world karate championship.
To prepare for the WKF, Christo must undergo intensive training from September 23 to October 6. Christo is known to compete in the men’s U-21 individual kata class.
“I compete in the U-21 men’s individual kata class and have faced Columbia, Egypt, Italy, and fell in the quarterfinals,” Christo told UMN News Service.
Despite falling in the quarterfinals, Christo won first place in the National Karate Championship, first place in the SEAKF event, and second place in the AKF event.

How Christo balances his studies with his career as an athlete
“I still attend online lectures with intensive training every day. I try to divide my time as well as possible even though it is sometimes difficult to do so. UMN supports my achievements so they give me an excused absence and achievement award at the end of the year,” Christo said.
The coach must also monitor Christo’s preparation for competitions, from diet to sleep patterns, considering that health is one of the important elements in his career as an athlete. This is also so Christo can undergo matches in the healthiest and best condition possible.
In addition, Christo has to practice almost every day and is given a rest day on Sundays.
Now, Christo is in the senior class preparing for the 2025 SEA Games. He also has to undergo long-term training and may need to take a leave of absence from college next semester. Even so, Christo continues to do his best to attend lectures at UMN well and according to lecture rules.
