UMN and Kehati Book Review
June 10, 2024UMN Officially Partners with Maybank
June 10, 2024Gading Serpong, June 6, 2023 – Six students from Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) have partnered with Cisauk State Elementary School to launch the EcoKids 1.0 program, an education-based environmental sustainability initiative.
Through a collaboration between UMN students and the fifth-grade students of SDN Cisauk, the EcoKids 1.0 program aims to not only create a young generation that cares about the environment but also hone their practical skills in managing their plastic waste at home with their parents’ help.
“So, through this program, the children are expected not only to become targets of change but also agents of change who can influence the people around them,” said Leony Widyatna Loren, one of the students implementing the EcoKids 1.0 program. Thus, in addition to being the target of change, the participants are also expected to become agents of change in environmental conservation efforts in the future.
To support environmental awareness and sustainable skills, the Ecokids program activities are held for two days: Tuesday, 28 May 2024, and Thursday, 30 May 2024. Participants will engage in a series of educational activities designed to provide a better understanding of the importance of plastic waste management and creative ways to recycle and utilize it.
In the two-day activity, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara students used pre-test and post-test tools to measure the children’s increased understanding of plastic waste.
The first day of the activity focused on educating and demonstrating how to turn plastic waste into useful items. The children were invited to participate in various creative activities, such as making crafts and learning simple recycling techniques.
Meanwhile, on the second day of the activity, the participants were invited to exhibit their work made from plastic waste. Unexpectedly, the children were enthusiastic about this activity, which is evident in their beautiful and creative works.
“I didn’t expect that the children would be able to make such cool work from plastic waste. Everything is perfect,” said Anton Binsar, the supervisor of the EcoKids 1.0 program.
The artworks not only showcased the children’s creativity but also gave a strong message on the importance of managing plastic waste wisely. The event was then closed with a handprint activity, during which the children marked their commitment to contributing to keeping the environment clean.
EcoKids 1.0 is an education-based and community-based program. In addition to providing education to the school, the students of Universitas Multimedia Nusantara also provided trash cans to merchants around the school area.
Each merchant is given one trash can and invited to become an agent of change by directing children to throw garbage in the trash cans placed in their respective carts. “Wow, thank you very much. I feel helped,” said one of the traders around the snack area. The merchants, as one of the main contributors of plastic waste, admitted that they were helped by the provision of plastic trash cans.
The EcoKids 1.0 program is one of the steps for Universitas Multimedia Nusantara to connect and form partnerships with external parties. “We hope that this EcoKids 1.0 program will be the first step to start a collaboration between SDN Cisauk and Universitas Multimedia Nusantara,” Yayah Rokayah, principal of SDN Cisauk, said.
