Hello friends! Don’t you know that data plays a vital role for humans, and it continues to grow? Some time ago, data was generally collected or primarily available physically. However, along with the development of today’s technology and using the advantages of the internet, much data is available digitally.
Thus, it is not surprising that the term big data has emerged, which is data that is very large and increasing. It should also be noted that big data has advantages and disadvantages. What are the advantages and disadvantages of big data that we need to know?
Currently, big data has touched almost all fields ranging from health, education, technology, economics, business, and many other areas that utilize the role of big data. Big data is an extensive collection of data consisting of structured and unstructured data.
Some examples of big data we often encounter include its application in social media, email categorization, digital marketing, and many others. In this article, we will especially recognize some of the advantages and disadvantages of big data. Let’s take a look!
Advantages of Big Data
As we already know, every technological development has both positive and negative impacts. This also applies to big data. The existence of big data has several advantages and disadvantages. The following are some of the advantages of big data, namely:
1. Can Detect Fraud
Currently, fraud can not only be done directly but can also be done digitally, commonly referred to as cybercrime. Cybercrime is a form of crime committed with computers or network devices and is usually connected online. Some examples of cybercrime are data theft (phishing), illegal transactions, email hacking, computer system hijacking, and others. Well, with the existence of big data that is processed in such a way, the data minimizes and detects fraud by reading unusual activities.

2. Improving Productivity
The difference between big data and other data is that big data has several characteristics. The characteristics of big data that characterize it include volume (amount of data), velocity (speed of flow that must be analyzed), and variety (diversity of sources and forms of data). In addition, big data is also real-time, which means that data continues to grow and grow every minute and even every second to increase user productivity.
3. Providing the Right Insights
Every company generally has a database containing big data related to the company. This big data contains essential information that can be used for various purposes, such as making business decisions, product development, designing UX, and providing the proper insight for the company.
4. Can Develop Products Easier
In companies engaged in producing goods, developing products is one of the main goals. Developing more suitable and targeted products will increase the company’s profits and profits. The existence of big data can facilitate the analysis process to determine what steps are selected for the product development process.
Disadvantages of Big Data
After knowing some of the advantages of big data, we also need to know that big data has several disadvantages, including the following.
1. Questionable Data Quality
In the previous section, it was known that big data comes from various sources and types. In the process of analyzing data, the quality of the data required is also different. Therefore, when analyzing data requires data that needs to be selected first and needs to use a good analytical process so that the results of data analysis are more accurate.
2. Lack of Data Practitioners
The existence of big data that has filled our daily lives needs to be further analyzed. The need for human resources who can handle this problem or commonly referred to as data practitioners is also sought after by many companies. However, currently, the data practitioners available with user needs are still not balanced. There are many vacant data practitioner positions, and companies continue looking for data practitioners who can handle data problems.
3. Security Risks
Every job, whether done online or offline, has its own risks. This type of data, synonymous with digital execution, also has security risks. Currently, most companies store company data in databases that can be accessed online and offline. Therefore, creating a security system needs to be continuously monitored and improved to minimize the occurrence of data hacking by hackers.

4. Requires Hardware
Big data containing thousands or even millions of data must be analyzed using supporting systems and hardware. By using supporting hardware and large storage media, data practitioners will find it easier to carry out the big data analysis process.
