TANGERANG – UMN’s Career Development Center (CDC) held an independent internship preparation webinar with the theme “Building Your Application Letter” (01/12/2022). This webinar focused on cover letters and resumes.
Elfira Fitri Wahyono, M.Si., CPRW, the Manager of External Student Affairs at Multimedia Nusantara University, also provided material on application letters for students who will carry out internships.
According to Elfira, students must research job vacancies before making a CV and cover letter. Some information that needs to be known is as follows.
- Company identity
- Job position and location
- Description of job responsibilities
- Candidate requirements
- How to apply for the job
- Application deadline
Elfira says that a proper cover letter includes information about self-introduction, personal abilities, reasons for applying to the vacancy, and a request to be invited to the interview process.
“To support that you are a suitable candidate, the way is to explain your abilities and skills that match the company’s needs,” said Elfira.
In the opening part of the cover letter, applicants must write self-introduction information, convey the position they want to apply for and the source of job vacancy information. Then, write the reason for applying for the job.
In the body, applicants must show themselves as the right candidate and convey supporting information relevant to the job vacancy position.
In the closing section, applicants must write their motivation to work for the company, hope to proceed to the interview stage, attach supporting documents, and write the applicant’s contact information (email and telephone).
Elfira also talked about the difference between a resume and a CV. A resume summarises education, experience, skills and achievements relevant to the position you want to apply for. Meanwhile, a CV is more detailed, including educational background, teaching experience, research, publications, awards, etc.
Before applying for an internship, students need to prepare a resume first. ATS resumes are used by companies these days to make it easier for recruiters to select candidates. ATS (Application Tracking System) is a company software that collects resumes and accelerates the selection of candidate management according to keywords the company has created.
Elfira suggested that students can make ATS resumes instead of creative resumes with the following considerations.
- Content-focused ATS resume
- Neat design
- Structured explanation
- ATS Friendly
In addition, Elfira also explained that seven points need to be written in a resume, such as personal information, objectives, education information, work/organization/committee, achievements, workshops/seminars, and skills.
The webinar ended with a question and answer session and an evaluation of the resumes and cover letters made individually by students.
