March 7, 2022Guest Lecture: Communication For Sustainable Development
March 10, 2022TANGERANG – Waste is a severe problem on this earth, especially those originating from production. So, is there an environmentally friendly system to manage the waste without reducing its material value? This is what we want to answer through a circular economy system.
The Master of Technology Management Study Program of Multimedia Nusantara University (MMT UMN) took the initiative to hold a webinar with themed “Technology for Change: Towards Digital Circular Economy” via Zoom, Saturday (19/2/22). The webinar invited keynote speaker Nurvitria M. Kristofikova, an Ellen Macarthur Foundation Circular Pioneer and the Program Director at AgUnity.
On this occasion, Nurvitria introduced the concept of a circular economy which is different from the concept of a linear economy. The circular economy system allows the creation of a sustainable environment because it uses recycled materials. She also gave a detailed explanation of the business model and technology that can support the circular economy.
“Ultimately, what consumers want is the experience, not the product itself. They want experience,” said Nurvitria.
Therefore, she said it is essential to experiment with business models so that this circular economy system can work. This is also because it is not uncommon for people to perceive recycled products as low-quality products.

Fortunately, today’s technology supports the circular economy system that it has created a variety of business models. Nurvitria mentioned several circular economy business models, such as circular supplies, resources recovery, product life extension, sharing platform, and product as a service.
She gave one example of implementing the circular supplies business model to manufacture food packaging from banana stems. In addition to the various examples given, Nurvitria also emphasized that materials will be one of the main aspects to support a circular economy system. Therefore, she said it is essential to know the exact type of material.
“When we talk about a circular economy, we can’t help but think about the material. Each material has a different way to be extracted, exposed, manufactured, recycled,” she said.
Furthermore, Nurvitria revealed that the circular economy system could utilize materials that can be renewed (regenerative) and used for a long time (prolonged use). According to her, the product designer’s role is important here to create durable products.
She also mentioned something else equally important: communication, education, and collaboration with other parties to create a sustainable circular economy and environmental system. However, Nurvitria also emphasized that all of these things can be started from oneself first.
“So, start from yourself because when we start talking about the global system, it’s already stressful. Therefore, we start with what is around us. What can we do?” Nurvitria said.
