TANGERANG – A regency in East Java Province, Bojonegoro, has faced great challenges for years in overcoming poverty. However, in recent years, various efforts have been made by the government and the community to reduce poverty and advance the regional economy.
The leadership of the 2008-2018 Bojonegoro Regent Suyoto was able to bring changes to the region. Not only did he remove Bojonegoro from the list of the 10 poorest regions in East Java, but he also achieved achievements in the international arena.
The discussion, hosted by moderator and lecturer of UMN’s Journalism Study Program, Dr. Ignatius Haryanto, S. Sos., M. Hum., thoroughly explored the success behind Suryoto’s leadership. This discussion also coincided with the launch of the book “Leadership 4.0: Bojonegoro’s Struggle to Get Out of Poverty” by Dr. Amanda Setiorini, S. Psi., M. M, CIQAR at the Kompas Institute, Jakarta, Friday (6/12/2024) afternoon.
Suyoto, Bojonegoro Regent for the 2008-2018 period, was outspoken in revealing that one key to successful leadership is the willingness to help.
Suryoto was outspoken that one of the keys to successful leadership is to have the willingness to help. “When there is a willingness to help, suddenly there are a lot of great roads. I turn people problems into government problems,” Suryoto said.
For this reason, the ability to listen is an equally important aspect. However, Suryoto believes that the capacity to listen and dialog is still one of the leadership problems in Indonesia. This is proven by the bureaucratic constraints in Indonesia, which often do not connect aspirations to policies or implementation.
UMN Rector Dr. Ninok Leksono said that leaders who can bring change are leaders who have great capacity.
UMN Rector Dr. Ninok Leksono also said that leaders who can bring change are leaders who have great capacity. This means that the leader needs to be one step ahead. In addition to being competent in their field, Ninok said leaders must have high empathy.
Director of the Jakarta State University Postgraduate Program, Prof. Dr. Dedi Purwana, M. Bus., said that leaders who can bring change are leaders who want to learn.
On the other hand, the Director of the Jakarta State University Postgraduate Program, Prof. Dr. Dedi Purwana, M. Bus, also added that leaders who can bring change want to learn. According to him, leaders who want to learn a lot are the ones who will usually succeed in bringing better changes. Moreover, Dedi said that a leader can be born by being trained.
Dedi also appreciated Suryoto for wanting to put his leadership experience in book form. Thus, this is expected to inspire other prospective leaders. “This is my concern. There are public officials who are successful in the region, but they are reluctant to share their success in the form of a book. Very rare,” Dedi said.
Agreeing with this, Amanda, the book’s author, also revealed how Suryoto has many stories. This was one of the successes that made it easy for her to publish the book “Leadership 4.0: Bojonegoro’s Struggle to Get Out of Poverty”.
Through this book, Amanda uses a qualitative approach that explores the main issue of how to bring about change in the notoriously complicated bureaucratic ranks. According to her, leadership 4.0 is about showing different leaders.
“So, the leader who, in my opinion, will make a change or improvement must know very well what the area has and does not have. 4.0 is more about that level,” Amanda explained.
