DIn this graduation, UMN gave birth to the superior seeds of technology creators in the digital and non-digital fields to support Indonesia’s creative economy. Through a prototype Dog Feeder that can be controlled remotely, pet owners can schedule their pet feeding hours at home according to their wishes. Dog Feeder consists of an application and a prototype feeding machine created by Vania.
In addition to Vania, UMN also graduated a young technopreneur founder of start-up CaterInc who in 2016 managed to get a grant from kemenristekdikti of Rp 250 million as well as an entrepreneurial training scholarship to London, England. CaterInc, founded by Susanto Ario, Joshua Alamsyah, Pandu Baraja (informatics engineering graduate) and Gavra Pratama (graphic design graduate), is a start-up solution provider for catering businesses in Indonesia that brings together local catering providers with their local consumers through digital platforms. Until now, the number of catering vendors as many as 70 spread across 22 cities in Indonesia.
In the creative economy subsector regarding animation and film, UMN contributes many new filmmakers whose work has received appreciation from various prestigious festivals and competitions at home and abroad. Ninok Leksono, Rector of UMN, emphasized that to face the era of the ASEAN Economic Community (AA), UMN graduates in addition to having high competence in the field of expertise fielded must also have creativity and the spirit of innovation to be able to compete. “Indonesia is working to transform its economy from a natural resource-based economy to a knowledge-based economy. Opportunities are wide open in the AA era but new players are also arriving. So it’s inevitable, that competition will continue to color the course of a career. Creativity and the spirit of innovation are two important capitals that will make new products continue to be updated to meet the needs of the market. With innovation, discovery does not stop at the realm of science or research, but brings it into the commercial realm. This in turn will have a real impact on increasing national income if done by creative industry players on a large scale,” ninok explained.
In line with this, UMN also invited the Minister of Industry of the Republic of Indonesia, Airlangga Hartarto to give a public lecture on local creativity and innovation as a new strength of the Indonesian economy. “Looking at the development of start-ups today, the main focus is ICT and multimedia. Umn’s younger siblings are on the right track. That is, ICT and multimedia education can be maximized in university containers” He also mentioned that E-commerce in Indonesia is currently worth US $ 18 billion and in 5 years will grow 10-fold.
Like previous graduations, UMN always raises the theme of regionality in every event. This time, Graduation IX chose the dayak culture of Kalimantan as its characteristic. Not only through traditional clothing and stage arrangements that describe Dayak culture but the selection of Kalimantan songs and dances also enlivened this graduation.
