May 6, 2024Tangerang – Machine Learning & AI is currently a very popular technology used in various fields of daily life and industry. Interestingly, through this data trend and technological development, a Data Scientist is also one of the most in-demand professions in the future, with great career opportunities for those who have an IT and non-IT background. This is because the profession of a Data Scientist plays a key role in creating and running programming for various Machine Learning & AI products.
The DQLab online event is back! The Free Class Data Science Fundamentals Batch 34 program invited Marwan Musa, a Software Engineer at Baezeni Company Network, as a presenter. This activity provided in-depth insight into career opportunities in the field and tips, especially for those with a non-IT background.
In this activity, Marwan showed a real picture of data trends in 2024, which mostly led to the development and utilization of Machine Learning & AI in various industrial fields. An example is the advanced technology used by ChatGPT, Tesla, and Gemini.
Unlike humans who learn from experience at every step, Machine Learning & AI have the advantage of being able to analyze risks and correct its own mistakes so that it can produce accurate and quality analyses, decisions, predictions, and information. Therefore, the development of this technology also gave birth to extensive new career opportunities in the field of data, one of which is as a Data Scientist.
“If you want to have a career in data, you should focus on being a Data Scientist or Engineer because you will be able to focus more on Machine Learning & AI. In addition, we must also be able to adjust our data career plan to the demands of market trends. So, for now, a career in the data science industry with Machine Learning & AI domains will be more in demand,” Marwan said.
These points must be considered because until now, the division of Data Scientist jobs in Indonesia has not been applied comprehensively and specifically, even though there are differences and interrelated relationships within each job position. For example, a Software Engineer, whose job is more of an end-to-end application engineer, does not focus on data. However, some focus more on AI product development, like Marwan. Therefore, building a career in data must also be tailored to your personal goals and skill set.
“Then the skills needed as a data scientist are learning programming language statistical knowledge, but this can be done learning-by-doing, and in the end, you will learn Machine Learning too. Furthermore, there is data cleaning & preprocessing, visualization, SQL, and domain knowledge. In addition, you also have to master communication skills, problem-solving, version control, cloud computing, A/B Testing, and ethical consideration,” Marwan said.
After showing what skills must be learned and mastered to become a Data Scientist, Marwan was also directed to do a self-assessment. This can be done by analyzing which skills are not yet and already owned, with preferred interests, so that you can determine and plan what to focus on in the future, whether Machine Learning, Deep Learning, or others.
At the end of the session, Marwan gave tips on planning career goals using the SMART method so that career goals can be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and in accordance with a predetermined time.
He also gave tips on how to start preparing for a career by joining a training or boot camp that facilitates mentorship activities at DQLab, building networking, and increasing projects such as portfolio data on Kaggle and Github. In addition, maximize personal branding and connections with various HR companies on LinkedIn because this will provide good career insight to start a career as a successful Data Scientist in the future.
In addition, he provides important information regarding the Data Scientist Career Track for the participants, especially beginners with a non-IT background. Participants can get exclusive guidance from DQLab for their career preparation through the Machine Learning & AI for Beginner Bootcamp program to learn and improve Machine Learning & AI-related skills more comprehensively with professional mentors!
