World conditions are fast-paced in this current era, and job competition is increasing daily. Still, employment growth is not directly proportional, and the competition in the current workforce is getting tougher.
Companies now are not only interested in educational degrees but will choose potential employees from other various aspects. Starting from the background, skills, communication skills, and, last but not least, the characteristics or qualities we (students) have. The following are five characteristics that UMN students need to have to be more easily accepted at work.
1. Commitment
Most companies, especially more prominent and more popular companies like Kompas, BCA, and Tokopedia, not only need employees who are smart, intelligent, and easy to work with, but they are also looking for someone who commits. Committed to the company.
Companies need employees who want to work for longer to avoid frequent employee turnovers and the high cost of finding new employees. However, it cannot be denied that the employee’s commitment to this company is like an arranged marriage. Because there needs to be a match between the company’s mission and the goals employees would like to achieve in their careers. So, if everything matches, employee commitment shouldn’t be a problem.

2. Be Proactive
Proactive means pro/supporting activeness. Obviously, companies need and like students/employees who are proactive. This proactive characteristic is sought for because proactive employees often find new ways of getting work done, which directly boosts the effectiveness and efficiency of the company. In addition, the energy of a proactive employee can also affect company productivity.
3. Works Well Under Pressure
This characteristic or quality shouldn’t be seen lightly. Not everyone can work well under pressure. The world of work is a different world than the world of university. The world of work is more challenging, and a lot of pressure is put on you, whether it’s work pressure (target/deadlines), pressure from superiors, pressure from the social work environment, and many more that require you to be mentally tough to survive and even achieve success.
Be reminded that there are ups and downs in a company. Therefore, many companies need employees who can withstand pressure, even making this pressure a challenge that needs to be found for creative solutions.
4. Good at Controlling Emotions
Not only being resistant to pressure, but the characteristic of being good at controlling emotions is also one of the most sought-after characteristics by companies. How come? The world of work is full of turmoil and challenges that can stress a person out of it. There are always problems waiting that can make a person emotional and angry.
Therefore, the company wants to find experts in holding and controlling emotions. The company considers the ability to control your emotions as a sign that you can act wisely and think twice before acting. In addition, emotionally intelligent people are usually found easy to work within a team. By hiring intelligent people on the emotional side, the company will find it easier to create peace within the company.
5. Open-Minded
Last but not least is the characteristic of being open-minded. Good companies will usually look for students/employees who have this characteristic. Because open-minded students are inquisitive and want to open themselves up to something new, implying that students/employees want to learn and develop themselves even more for work.
