Sumedang, June 20, 2024 – Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) proves its commitment to sustainable development by launching the “UMN for Safe School” activity. This program aims to support quality education (SDG number 4) and create sustainable cities and communities (SDG number 11) through disaster mitigation and preparedness education in schools.
The first “UMN for Safe School” activity was held at SDN (elementary school) Manglayang 1 and SDN Manglayang 2, Sumedang Regency, on June 19 and 20, 2024. The program was designed to educate students and teachers about different types of natural disasters and the mitigation measures to take.
Given the high risk of earthquakes in Sumedang Regency, UMN sees the importance of educating students on how to deal with this potential hazard. The UMN team includes lecturers from five study programs and students who all have their own roles in this activity. Given the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in efforts to improve mitigation and preparedness for potential disasters, the UMN team includes lecturers from five study programs and students who all have their own roles in this activity.
UMN recognizes that disaster preparedness is an integral part of quality education. Therefore, this campaign focuses on providing practical knowledge regarding disaster mitigation, ensuring students have the necessary skills to act in emergencies. The program also supports SDG number 11 by helping to create resilient and disaster-safe communities.
This campaign is supported by Sky Volunteer, an organization active in disaster mitigation and preparedness across Indonesia, and UMN’s Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM). This collaboration strengthens strategic partnerships following SDG 17 on Partnerships to Achieve Goals.
The principal of SDN Manglayang 1, Nurhayati, stated, “Education about earthquake mitigation and preparedness is very important as basic knowledge for school residents. We hope this activity can build a culture of awareness of potential disasters from an early age.”
The Head of SDN Manglayang 2, Anggi Baidilah, added, “Our students are very enthusiastic about participating in this activity. We hope that education for disaster mitigation and preparedness like this is always carried out, especially in schools located in areas with high disaster potential.”
Firman Budiman, Co-Founder of Sky Volunteer, welcomes this partnership as it can help accelerate the achievement of the most important common goal, which is humanity.
“This program aligns with the Safe School Movement we have also started. Through this partnership, we believe that our goal of creating disaster-safe education units will be easier to achieve,” Firman said.
Maria Advenita Gita Elmada, Chairperson of the PKM activity and the “UMN for Safe School” campaign, stated that this activity was the result of the collaboration between UMN’s academic community, consisting of cross-program lecturers and students. “We hope to contribute to creating a safe learning environment through this activity,” added Maria.
With the “UMN for Safe School” campaign, UMN hopes to become a model for other schools in dealing with potential disasters and become a strategic step towards better school safety.
