Tangerang – UMN Communication Science Distance Learning Program lecturer Silvanus Alvin had the opportunity to be one of the panelists in an open discussion entitled: Will Gen-Z take control of their future? The Chevening Alumni Association Indonesia (CAAI) organised the event at The Gudskul Art Gallery, Jagakarsa, on Saturday, March 11, 2023. Alvin said that the existence of Gen-Z should not only be seen as a target for votes in the upcoming 2024 elections but must be placed as a constituency that is heard and considered.
“Gen-Z in Indonesia will make a difference in the upcoming 2024 elections. However, Gen-Zers should not only be political objects whose votes are contested. They must also be heard and cared for,” said Alvin.
Not only that, Alvin also explained that there is a phenomenon of short logic attention that occurs among young people today. This cannot be separated from the influence of social media and content features with a duration limited to no more than one minute.
“Nowadays, content is made with the concept of snackable content. Like eating wind snacks, people will be easily addicted. And this kind of content is favored by Gen-Z,” said Alvin, also a 2009 UMN alumni and a master’s graduate from the University of Leicester.
Furthermore, Alvin thanked Stela Nau, the President of CAAI for the 2021-2023 period and a Chevening scholarship winner from Goldsmith University of London, for giving him a moment to share his thoughts.
“What an extraordinary opportunity to be able to share in front of great people who are alumni of Chevening scholarship recipients and the wider community who attended this discussion event,” said Alvin.
In this discussion, there were also several other panelists, such as Istman Musaharun from UMN Consulting, Adelia Surya Pratiwi from the Ministry of Finance, and Nariswari Nurjaman from the World Bank.
Istman explained research related to political views and what media is the source of political information for Gen-Z. This research involved 802 respondents from Jabodetabek. Meanwhile, Adelia and Nariswari provided an economic perspective concerning Gen-Z.
