UMN’s Commitment to Meaningful Education: Empowering Students with Practical, SDG-Focused Learning Across the University

Committed to shaping the next generation of leaders, the educational approach empowers students by embedding the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into every aspect of their learning. By blending theoretical knowledge with real-world application, students are encouraged to engage with urgent global challenges, including sustainability, social inequality, and innovation. Below are some of the initiatives that reflect our dedication to providing meaningful education aligned with the SDGs.

UMN’s Curriculum on SDGs 

Teaching SDG values in the curriculum is essential to help students not only understand sustainability but also put it into practice in their daily lives. By weaving SDG principles into its courses, UMN encourages students to become more aware of global challenges like climate change, inequality, and environmental sustainability. This approach helps them develop the knowledge and skills to make a real impact, both in their studies and in the world around them. In the 2022/2023 academic year, UMN offered 171 courses focused on sustainability and the environment, demonstrating the university’s commitment to providing education that addresses these important issues. Tackling Online Gender-Based Violence: UMN Leads the Conversation on Digital Safety 

Tackling social issues is a vital part of the university’s mission, with online gender-based violence becoming an increasingly urgent concern. In partnership with Kapal Perempuan and ICT Watch, a recent public discussion brought attention to the rise of online harassment, a problem affecting many, especially in Indonesia. As the internet plays a larger role in daily life, incidents of abuse and discrimination online have surged, often targeting women and marginalized groups. Hosting this important dialogue reflects the university’s dedication to nurturing an informed and responsible student community, ready to address challenging real-world issues. 

UMN’s Task Force Hosts Public Discussion on Online Gender-Based Violence (Doc. UMN) 

During the event, experts and activists spoke about the extent of online violence and the importance of education and awareness in combating it. The discussion wasn’t just about highlighting the problem, but also about equipping students with the knowledge they need to take action. From understanding how to spot online abuse to knowing what steps to take in response, the session aimed to empower students to be proactive in creating safer online spaces. By weaving these important topics into university programs, UMN ensures that students aren’t just learning theory, but are also gaining practical tools to engage with and address social challenges. 

UMN’s initiative to bring together students, experts, and activists for these kinds of discussions demonstrates how the university is preparing its students to be leaders who can bring about change. UMN’s Mentoring Program: Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow with Purpose and Skills 

Besides on-class courses, the Mentoring Program is a cornerstone initiative that reflects a deep commitment to holistic student development. This annual, mandatory program for all new students helps ease the transition into university life while cultivating essential soft skills. Through mentoring, students are immersed in core values such as Caring, Credibility, Competence, Competitiveness, and Customer Delight, which serve as guiding principles for their personal growth and academic journeys. This initiative supports Quality Education and Decent Work and Economic Growth by empowering students to identify their strengths and prepare for real-world challenges, equipping them with the tools to succeed in their careers and make a positive impact in their communities.  

UMN Mentoring Program (Doc. UMN)

The 2023 Mentoring Program, with the theme “Perceive Your Purpose and Believe Your Potential,” encourages students to reflect on their goals and recognize their strengths as they begin their journey at university. It’s designed to help them explore their passions, set meaningful goals, and build the confidence to navigate university life with direction and purpose. By guiding students to align their personal values with their academic and career aspirations, UMN ensures they are well-prepared for the challenges ahead and ready to make a positive impact. This program is a clear reflection of UMN’s commitment to shaping students who are not only academically capable but also ready to contribute to society and succeed in life.

Breaking the boundaries of traditional education, the HireHub initiative empowers students to turn their ideas into real-world solutions. This startup incubator program offers a hands-on experience where students can develop innovative products and tackle pressing challenges. By nurturing entrepreneurial skills and promoting sustainable practices, the program aligns with SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), preparing students to become leaders who are ready to make a positive global impact.
