August 7, 2023Education should go beyond the classroom and make a real difference in the community. At UMN, we are committed to building strong connections between students, alumni, and local residents through outreach programs that support sustainability and resilience. By tackling key issues like disaster preparedness, small business development, and community growth, these initiatives show how working together can create lasting, positive change. Below are some examples of our efforts to provide education that not only transforms students but also helps strengthen the communities they are a part of.
Alumni Empower Local Communities with Radio Network for Disaster Preparedness
Alumni Relations of Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) Collaborates to Support Local Communities (Doc. UMN)
Alumni Relations at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), through the KAMI UMN program and in collaboration with LPPM UMN, recently provided communication radios as part of the Radio Network Alert Program in Panggarangan Village, South Lebak, Banten. This effort delivered 4 dual-band and 8 single-band radios to the South Lebak Mitigation Task Force (GMLS), aiming to strengthen disaster preparedness, particularly for tsunami risks in an area that is highly vulnerable to natural disasters. Through the KAMI PEDULI program, UMN alumni continue to make a tangible impact on their communities, demonstrating that their contributions extend far beyond their years as students.

The provision of these radios, based on discussions with the South Lebak Mitigation Task Force (GMLS), reflects UMN’s commitment to social responsibility, as outlined in the Tridharma of Higher Education. These radios will not only improve communication during emergencies but also serve the community during normal times by disseminating important information. This collaboration exemplifies how UMN alumni and academic institutions can extend educational initiatives beyond campus, supporting local communities in disaster preparedness and communication. It also underscores the value of universities in building strong, lasting ties with alumni, encouraging them to take part in outreach initiatives that benefit communities, displaced people, and vulnerable groups—ultimately contributing to greater resilience and lasting positive impact. UMN Students Create Lasting Impact on Local Communities Through MSME and Village Development Projects
UMN Students in the MBKM Program 2023: Making an Impact on Local Communities (Doc. UMN)
Students are making a significant impact in local communities through a hands-on project focused on supporting small businesses and fostering sustainable village development. As part of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) initiative, they are working closely with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Kemuning, Curug Sangereng, Rancagong, Legok, and Pagedangan villages to improve business strategies, strengthen financial practices, and ensure long-term success. This collaboration is not only helping businesses thrive but also creating new job opportunities and boosting the local economy. By applying what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world challenges, the students are contributing to the community and gaining valuable experience. This project, organized by Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), is a powerful example of how education can drive social and economic change.

Alongside their work with MSMEs, the students are also involved in creating a Village Master Plan, focusing on sustainable development that benefits the entire community. From improving infrastructure to implementing eco-friendly practices, the plan aims to ensure the village grows in a way that is both inclusive and sustainable. These efforts are empowering local residents to actively participate in shaping their community’s future. Through these projects, UMN students are gaining valuable experience while showing how education can support and uplift local communities, creating positive and lasting change. Read more.
