TANGERANG – Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) welcomes Kiel University, officially the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel, Germany, to discuss possible collaborations at the UMN campus on Monday (04/03/24). Several UMN and Kiel University faculty representatives attended the meeting.
The meeting started with UMN and Kiel University, each showing their university profiles. Prof. Dr. Tobias Hoscherf, the Vice-President of Kiel University, shared that this meeting was an excellent opportunity as both campuses have many things in common. He is happy to be able to get to know a university (UMN) with a profile that is very similar to Kiel’s.
“[Like UMN], we are not a university that looks for research outputs that are four-star or peer-reviewed. We love to engage with businesses and real-world problems. We don’t teach out of a textbook. We like to touch things, build things, and try them out in a real environment,” Tobias said, opening the discussion and representing his team.

Tobias and his team, consisting of faculty representatives, then shared some information about their programs and courses. Like UMN, their classes are intimate, consisting of 10-40 students per class. This allows lecturers to work closely with the students.
Kiel also actively connects students with the industry. Hence, Kiel representatives shared that the likelihood of students getting a job after graduating is quite high.
“We keep our finger on the pulse about what the industry wants and they talk to us– say they have a demand for people and need more employment in a sector. We then direct our study programs towards them for this reason,” a Kiel representative shared.

UMN faculty representatives, too, gave an introduction to each of the faculty’s programs and current interests. In addition, UMN Global Office Manager Boby Arinto, S.E., M.M., shared the international collaborations UMN conducted. He wishes similar collaborations could be done with Kiel University, whether a joint degree, student and lecturer exchange, research collaboration, etc.
In this opportunity, UMN also officially invited Kiel University to come to UMN’s film festival. Inspired by the Film Department of UMN’s collaboration with students at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), Boby said UMN and Kiel could do the same.
“We have two classes that are similar (to LJMU’s). We have the class Documentary Production, which they also have. The two classes collaborate on a project with the theme of water. It’s fascinating to see that we could collaborate even though the culture is totally different,” Boby shared.
“I’m very interested,” Tobias said. Kiel University representatives shared how they, too, have premieres of produced films– documentaries, animated films, fictional films, and more.

There were many similarities in activities, visions, and goals between UMN and Kiel University. Many collaboration ideas were brought up, and future discussions will be needed.
After the fruitful meeting, UMN invited the Kiel University representatives to tour the UMN campus and facilities. We look forward to a collaboration soon!
