TANGERANG- Visual Communication Design (VCD) study program lecturer at Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) Dr. Anne Nurfarina, S.Sn., M.Sn. has just received the Education Award for the 2022-2024 period from the International Council of Design (ICoD) organization on Friday (18/10).
The Dean of UMN’s Faculty of Art and Design represented the award, Muhammad Cahya Mulya Daulay, S.Sn., M.Ds., in (Qingdao), China. This award is one part of the International Conference on Evolving Design Education Curricula forum at Tsinghua Academy of Arts and Science Innovation Research (TASA).
The ICoD Education Award was initiated in 2006. It is given to teachers with outstanding innovations or achievements in design education that impact the wider community.
Some of the predecessors of this award recipient include the Hong Kong Design Institute, National Taiwan University of the Arts, Hongik University Korea, and Wanganui School of Design New Zealand.
This year, Anne Nurfarina received the highest score for the Education Award in the field of human inclusivity. Another Education Award in the field of developing design education for industry was given to a professor at Imperial College London.

Anne was recognized for promoting education for people with disabilities through art. This creativity theory lecturer has been involved in the world of education for more than twenty years and has actively fought for disability education rights.
“The mindset of people on supporting people with disabilities is care, not education. That is wrong. Care leaves them with their current quality without any orientation to improve what they will become,” said Anne when contacted on Wednesday (23/10).
In 2014, Anne founded the Art Therapy Center in Bandung. The Art Therapy Center is an art-based education platform for people with disabilities. She then disseminated her learning methods here to various regions in Indonesia.
Since joining UMN as a lecturer in 2018, Anne believes that UMN is an inclusive educational institution that teaches students to be open and accepting of differences and has excellence in multimedia. Currently, Anne is developing research and simulation media for learning in Sekolah Luar Biasa (SLB), with the possibility of utilizing Augmented Reality (AR) technology in her innovation.
“How to help SLB teachers to get fun and interactive learning media. This involves young lecturers and students. Because the great ones in the multimedia field are these young people,” said Anne.

Anne’s campaign is in line with the theme of this year’s ICoD Education Award, which is “kindness.”
“I like to work on things symbolic of human relationships, that the value of kindness is the main thing. That design principle is what I apply in my work,” Anne said.
For the record, UMN is one of three universities in Indonesia that have been registered in the ICoD membership network since 2020.
During the four-day TASA-ICoD forum in Qingdao, the Dean of UMN’s Faculty of Arts and Design, Cahya Daulay, said that the faculty represented Indonesia in a dialog about the development of the design curriculum, the challenges faced, and the long-term plans for design education.
“This award is not a competition for achievement, but an award for individual commitment in proving that design is not only about aesthetics, but also has an impact on other humans and plays an important role in shaping an inclusive progressive culture,” Cahya said when contacted on Monday (28/10).
