Tangerang, January 25, 2023 – Forensic psychology expert from the Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia (UI), Nathanael EJ Sumampaw, Ph.D, briefed UMN Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force (Satuan Tugas Pencegahan dan Penanganan Kekerasan Seksual/PPKS) members on how to investigate sexual violence properly.
The rise of Online-Based Gender Violence (GBV) cases has caused deep concern for many people. This phenomenon is not only a concern for the general public but also causes anxiety, especially in the campus environment. In facing this challenge, a joint effort is needed to identify the causes, develop prevention strategies, and raise awareness of the adverse effects of GBV.
In response to this condition, UMN’s Sexual Violence Prevention and Handling Task Force took a proactive step by inviting a forensic psychology expert, Nathanael Elnadus Johanes Sumampouw. On this occasion, Nathael explained the attitudes that must be taken by the campus when there is an incoming report of sexual violence.
“The power of memory is very important in the investigation process. Therefore, it is necessary to build a comfortable situation so that the reporter can tell his experience in accordance with what happened,” explained Nathael. He said that stressful thoughts can prevent the reporter from remembering what happened.

Nathanael also emphasized that the investigating team must use open questions, not leading or tendentious ones. This is considered crucial in ensuring an objective and accurate investigation.
Intan Primadani, UMN Communication Science lecturer, said that the purpose of this training is so that the case handling process, especially the sexual violence investigation process, can run smoothly. She hopes that campus investigators can find techniques or ways to get the information needed from the complainant and the reported.
