TANGERANG – Multimedia Nusantara University was the only one representing Indonesia in “The International Workshop Summer 2023 Phyton Programming and Drone Competition” program at Tokyo Denki University, Japan, from July 30-August 5, 2023.
The program, co-sponsored by Fortinet, took five students from UMN’s Faculty of Engineering and Informatics to Japan. They are UMN 2020 Physics Engineering student Linus Gregorius Radithya; UMN 2021 Computer Engineering student Juan Terro Tjandra; UMN 2021 Electrical Engineering student Michael Bryan Jahanto; UMN 2020 Electrical Engineering student Raphael Malcolm; UMN 2020 Electrical Engineering student Daniel Hendrawan.

The UMN students each collaborated with students from various countries, ranging from Japan, Thailand, to Taiwan. They also had the opportunity to learn how to control drones through the Python programming language.
“Many new things were gained after attending the workshop. We can exchange information about the world of programming between other participants, get new relationships, and learn about new cultures,” Bryan said.
Furthermore, the participants implemented the workshop results by participating in the competition. There were two competition categories: reading QR codes with drones and drone races. Daniel’s group won first place, Raphael’s group won second place, and Juan’s group won third place for the QR Code reading category with drones. Meanwhile, only Raphael’s group won in the drone race category with a first-place score.

“Overall, the most impactful thing [from this training and competition] is to be more courageous to get out of the comfort zone,” said Raphael, who won in two competition categories.
Linus also felt very satisfied with this program, even though his group did not win. In addition to gaining knowledge about drones and Python programming, Linus and his friends also learned Japanese culture and language. They were invited to tour the Japanese Space Agency, JAXA, and the robotics company, Cyberdyne. According to Linus, this experience was terrific.
Linus hopes that this activity can be the beginning of inspiration to conduct research and flight trials of drones at UMN. Daniel also hopes this program can be held again in the future. On the other hand, Juan admitted that he had a conversation with the organizer of this program, Tokyo Denki University. “They said it will be held again next year,” Juan said.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Informatics UMN, Dr. Eng. Niki Prastomo, S.T., M.Sc., said that this program would be very beneficial for students, especially to enrich and apply the knowledge they have learned during their studies.
Not only academically, UMN Rector Dr. Ninok Leksono revealed that UMN students’ involvement in this program could also be an opportunity to strengthen diplomacy with other countries.
“Diplomacy is important. It’s not just about learning,” continued Vice-Rector for Relations and Cooperation Prof. Dr. Muliawati G. Siswanto, M.Eng.Sc., agreeing with Ninok’s statement.
Muliawati said that the involvement of UMN students in the Tokyo Denki University program was not the first time. She admitted that the Japanese private university had been UMN’s number one partner since its establishment. Tokyo Denki University has often invited UMN students to various programs there.
