Who here loves video artistry and aesthetics? Maybe, some of you are into editing and want to major in a subject that can develop your talents and lead you to a career as a professional video editor!
If this sounds like you, Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) also has majors suitable for those who like video editing.
Are Video Editing Jobs Popular?
Yup! Quoting Backstage, in a time when 86% of companies rely on video for marketing, the demand for video editors is at an all-time high.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 28,000 film and video editors are currently employed, with most working in California or New York. Many businesses and networks hire in-house editors for their creative content, and freelance platforms like Upwork and Fiverr offer opportunities for editors to work with companies and independent creators.
The job of a content creator is also prevalent in Indonesia. You will often find content creator position vacancies on job search applications such as Linkedin. Well, to become a reliable content creator, in addition to being creative, you must also have at least basic video editing skills.
Plus, most of these video editing jobs are open for Work From Home (WFH) jobs! This means you can accept projects from anywhere, be it in Indonesia or even abroad.

UMN Majors to Learn Video Editing
1. Journalism
Why journalism? Don’t journalism majors just learn to become a reporter? If you study at a campus that adopts the latest and international standard journalism curriculum, journalism students will be taught everything related to journalism, including video editing! Students will be equipped with the correct way to edit videos and learn to use various video editing applications.
In an era of modern technology, a journalist no longer travels and covers issues with pen and paper to record information. A journalist in this era must be able to use various technologies (cellphones, cameras, recording devices, etc.) to record, take pictures, research, produce journalistic content (text, audio, photos, and videos), broadcast live, and utilize various social media to share information.
UMN also has a Digital Journalism major. UMN’s Journalism Study Program focuses on utilizing new technology to learn new forms of journalism. Therefore, learning activities are also supported by adequate technology.
Some courses are also adapted to the needs of the industry and the development of existing technology, such as mobile journalism, visual storytelling, and social media journalism courses that utilize the use of devices in producing and disseminating journalistic products through social media.
2. Film
Generally, students interested in becoming video editors will enter the film department. Of course, film majors will teach students more detail about producing and editing videos or films.
According to US News, film students work independently and in teams with their peers to learn how to take ideas from script to screen. They study a rigorous and practical curriculum to understand the role of sound, lighting, editing, and other aspects of making movies.
Film majors will begin by learning about the history and fundamentals of storytelling and visual production. Then, they will also learn how to make documentaries, screenwriting, or commercial and branded content production. In addition, some programs offer animation, visual effects, and digital game design courses.
UMN also has a film major, “Film and Animation,” for those interested! Film and Animation is a study program that teaches the knowledge of how to create works in the form of moving images. Students will learn technical matters such as story creation, camera usage, image preparation and editing, and skills that support good and quality filmmaking.
The Film and Animation Study Program of Multimedia Nusantara University is the only study program that combines film and animation into one program. However, students can choose one of the two to get more in-depth knowledge according to their interests.
