TANGERANG – On June 13, 2023, UMN was trusted to be the Host University for the Pre-Departure Briefing for all IISMA 2023 Awardees for Japan, which was attended by the Indonesian Ambassador to Japan & Micronesian Federation, Director General of Higher Education, Research & Technology, Chief Executive of the Independent Campus Center, UMN Vice-Chancellor of Relations & Cooperations.
Welcomed directly, Mulyawati, UMN’s Vice-Chancellor for Relations & Cooperations, expressed her pride for all IISMA 2023 awardees for Japan who managed to get the opportunity to study and expand their horizons to the Land of the Rising Sun.
“(You) are the chosen ones who are able to fulfill all the requirements to study at the best universities in Japan. May you all do well in the learning process and achieve achievements while bringing the good name of the university and the Indonesian nation,” Mulyawati said.
In line with Mulyawati, Nizam, Director General of Higher Education, Research & Technology, also gave a message to all IISMA 2023 awardees who will soon leave for Japan. In addition to learning, Nizam also hopes that the awardees can establish friendships with other students at the intended university and, of course, can understand the culture of Japan.
“Congratulations on enriching knowledge, enriching experience, building friendships and becoming Indonesian representative ambassadors. In addition to learning about science and technology in one of the countries that spearheads technology, I hope you can also learn about culture, work ethic, discipline, and eastern culture that is still well implemented there from friends and of course, local residents,” Nizam said.
“For all IISMA scholarship recipients, make the most of this opportunity for self-development and social networking. Absorb as much knowledge and positive experience as possible,” added Heri Akhmadi, the Indonesian Ambassador to Japan & Federated States of Micronesia, before proceeding to the material sharing session by Yusli Wardianto on how to Live Easy in Japan aimed at IISMA awardees who will leave for Japan in mid-September.
Accompanied by Boby Arinto, the moderator, Yusli, who is the Education and Culture Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, shared some tips that students can do there, starting from what transportation can be used, the currency that can be used, to the convenience stores scattered in Tokyo and Osaka.
UMN student who had the opportunity to receive an IISMA scholarship to Osaka University, Joan Fanny, also expressed her opinion on the Pre-Departure Briefing. According to her, the briefing given by Yusli earlier was very useful for her and other awardees, especially regarding medicines that must be prepared and public transportation that can be used.
“To me, this material is beneficial and detailed. One thing I will keep in mind when I am in Japan is that the culture when using their public transportation is very different from in Indonesia, because they are very concerned about order,” Joan said.
“In terms of my studies, I will try my best not only to fulfill my academic responsibilities, but also to mingle with the local and international people around me, in an effort to build broader and more meaningful relationships,” Joan concluded.
