TANGERANG – UMN Architecture students successfully placed third in the curation results of the INCASE IndoBuildTech Creative Architecture Student Exhibition 2023 with the concept of “Recomposing Heritage.”
INCASE (IndoBuildTech Creative Student Exhibition) 2023 is an exhibition and competition organized for creative young people throughout Indonesia. Jeanne Chaterine Karim, UMN Architecture student class of 2020, succeeded in placing third in the INCASE 2023 curation results (7/2023).
Dr. Freta Oktarina, S.Sn., M.Ars. and Rizki Tridamayanti Siregar, S.Pd., M.T. as the supervisors of the Architectural Design 4 (PA4) course admitted that they were proud and welcomed Jeanne’s participation in INCASE as part of the steps to expand student knowledge in the professional sphere while enriching Indonesia’s architectural repertoire.
Jeanne’s achievements not only encourage her to continue to excel, but will also trigger her friends and classmates in UMN Architecture to develop their achievements.
“We also really appreciate Jeanne’s achievements in INCASE. This reflects Jeanne’s achievements in PA4, which became one of the best works in and out of class and received positive responses,” said Freta.
Based on the sensitivity of the area around Jl. Budi Utomo, Central Jakarta, which has educational value, is surrounded by historical buildings such as the Cathedral Church, Banteng Field, and Istiqlal Mosque, as well as high educational value, Jeanne combines existing values into “Educational Value” in the form of an architectural design design entitled “Central Jakarta Urban Heritage Center.”
Jeanne’s architectural design comes from the “Architectural Design 4” course project at UMN’s Architecture Study Program in the 5th semester, which she worked on from August – December 2022 under the guidance of Dr. Freta Oktarina, S.Sn., M.Ars. and Rizki Tridamayanti Siregar, S.Pd., M.T..
In last year’s Architectural Design 4 (PA4) course, the design project was carried out by UMN Architecture Study Program in collaboration with Urban+, which accompanied students throughout the lecture process. In this PA4 project, students are asked to design mixed-use facilities focusing on hotel design.
In this PA4 project, the site used as a case study is located near the State Palace, Monas, and Banteng Field, which is the center of Jakarta. In addition to the strategic location, this area is also a historical area.

Jeanne reads the area and environment around the site very well so that she can come up with an interesting concept by combining the hotel with a library and gallery and making the designed site a new landmark, an educational center in the Banteng Field area.
“With the principle of sustainability at the core of UMN’s architecture, Jeanne also tried to process the spatial ideas of the hotel designed by adopting aspects of sustainability in the building elements she developed, starting from the site plan, lay out, opening plan, materials, to facade design. The result makes Jeanne’s design not only present excellent in composition but also succeeds in answering efforts to apply sustainability principles in architecture,” Freta said, as the supervisor.
The project carries the concept of “Recomposing Heritage” as a combination of historical education and recreation functions in the Central Jakarta area. This architectural design makes it easier for visitors to know the history of Central Jakarta’s development easily, completely, and concisely with the presence of the “Central Jakarta Urban Heritage Center,” which accommodates the needs of hotels, museums, libraries, and shopping centers in one building.
Jeanne admits that in-depth research is the main foundation for the success of her work.
“During the concept development, it took quite a while to develop. There were several revisions, even after the Midterm Exam, I also completely revised the shape of the building because there was a lack of research at the beginning,” Jeanne said.
In the future, Jeanne plans to submit her other architectural designs to various national and international competitions. She hopes more works from UMN architecture students will be selected and participate in similar competitions.
“I know that UMN architecture students have achievements and deserve to be known by many people,” concluded Jeanne.
