TANGERANG – Projects from three UMN Architecture 2023 student teams won multiple awards the “International Distant Practice Conference” competition in Novosibirsk, Russia, on Friday (15/12/23). They won second place, third place, and first honorable mention, respectively.
“International Distant Practice Conference” is a special competition for students majoring in design, such as architecture, urban planning, and product design. At least three universities from three countries participated in this competition, including Universitas Multimedia Nusantara in Indonesia; Novosibirsk State University of Architecture, Design and Arts (NSUADA) in Russia; and Vitebsk State Technological University (VSTU) in Belarus.
Initially, participants in the conference made short videos about their design projects. Then, only 25 videos out of 76 were selected to be presented in English. Lecturers from UMN, NSUADA, and VSTU conducted the judging of this competition. UMN Humanities Studies lecturer and judge Emanuella Christine N.M, M.Hum, CIQaR, said that the assessment focused on the basic knowledge concepts to the applied design concepts.
“The aspects of using English and Mise-en-Scene [harmony] in moving pictures packaging [are also] prioritized,” said Emanuella, who is also familiarly called Lia.

Isabelle Calysta Cherilyn and Matthew Rafael Santoso are UMN Architecture students who won 3rd place in this competition. They took the architecture project from the “Visual Art” course assignment in UMN’s Architecture Study Program.
“Our architecture project is called ‘Entrall.’ It is a 3D artwork of rattan. The rattan is woven one by one into the shape of a chapel so that it becomes a sculpture for people to get married,” Isabelle explained.
The Dean of UMN’s Architecture Study Program, Irma Desiyana, S.Ars., M.Arch. said that this achievement was something to be proud of, especially since the first semester UMN Architecture students already had ambitions to participate in the competition and win. She also revealed that UMN always continues to support and help students in various types of competitions. In this competition, UMN Architecture lecturers and UMN Humanities Study lecturers collaborated to help students prepare.
“For the making of the video project, UMN students who are directly involved in directing are UMN Architecture lecturers. Mrs. Lia [UMN Humanities lecturer] and I help students how to prepare presentation slides and videos, and how to deliver presentations,” said UMN Humanities lecturer Drs. Yohanes L. Billy, M.M..
Previously, UMN Humanities Studies had designed an English curriculum using English for Specific Purposes, whose syllabus is controlled by Evidence-Centered Design. Lia said that the achievement of UMN Architecture students is also proof of the harmony of the curriculum design.
“Because with a simple design without repeated interventions, UMN Architecture students prove that the competency system is indeed appropriate to be used as a control in teaching,” said Lia.
The following is a list of three teams of UMN Architecture 2023 students who won awards at the “International Distant Practice Conference” in Russia.
