“Visinema Studio is not limited to films. We do research first before making an animated film. One of them is UNICEF data, which shows that there are as many as 85 million people under 18. From here, we know the market will be huge, and the limited entertainment content for children is the basis for Visinema to make the animated film ‘JUMBO’ “, said Novia in her sharing session.
Novia added that the journey of making this animation took five years, and the process was not easy; more than 420 Indonesian creators were involved in making the animated film ‘JUMBO’. For Novia, this animated film “JUMBO” can be realized because of the collective work and collaboration with love from all the creators involved in the production process.
“JUMBO” is a movie for us, our children, and the children within us. “JUMBO” promotes many values such as friendship, family, and many more. Currently, “JUMBO” has reached more than three million viewers,” Novia continued.
Novia also shared that the animated film “JUMBO” production started in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, starting with script writing development. The animated film “JUMBO” also uses the “Kumpul Bocah” soundtrack. Novia and the team said that the new generation must know this song, which is also relevant for the animated film “JUMBO”.
“The storytelling of’ Jumbo’ is inspired by the team’s love of the characters, and each creator has their own personal affinity with the scenes they create. I want to give a different impression and message to the animated movie ‘JUMBO’. In addition to being an entertaining animated film, the animated film can bring messages and meanings of warmth to the audience, both children and adults,” Novia continued.
Presentation of material about the JUMBO animation voice directing process by Chrisnawan (Doc. UMN)
Chrisnawan continued this sharing session, sharing the voice directing process of the animated film “JUMBO”. For Chrisnawan, the creative industry needs voice directing, from commercials and audiobooks to animated films.
“The question people often ask is, in the animation process, animation first or voice first? In JUMBO, voice directing was done after the storyboard was completed, so that the scenes could be understood with the help of thumbnails,” Chrisnawan said.
For Chrisnawan, voice directing has a lot of responsibilities, both in the mood of the voice actor, choosing the right cast, understanding the story’s content, and voice editing. It’s complex, but it’s what produces a good story, atmosphere, and feel.
“The skills needed by a voice director are good communication skills, a good understanding of body acting, sensitivity to local or audio nuances, micro voice expression, and a sense of creativity,” said Chrisnawan.

This sharing session also discussed acting in animation with Bintang. According to Bintang, an actor needs to explore his role not only to convey the script and dialogue but also to recognize his character.
“Humans can feel many feelings, happy, sad, angry, disgusted, and more. We can also see when people are in a certain atmosphere, which is called a primal sense. In the world of acting, there are two, namely broad acting and subtle acting, where when seeing their reaction or action, trying to conclude themselves in the moment,” Bintang said.
For Bintang, many things need to be considered in animation, starting from the principles of animation, sensitivity, feeling emotions, and knowing the purpose of the animation. In animation, you can’t just give one dialog without nuance, meaning that providing complex emotions is very important.
