UMN interviewed the two winners, Maria Felicia (nicknamed Felicia) and Maria Estleia (nicknamed Maria), to find out about their experiences participating in the INDDEX Design Degree Show 2022 competition. They shared that they knew about this competition from their UMN VCD lecturer.
“Initially, I was told about this competition and was invited to join by Ms. Fonita, and I think this is quite a rare opportunity, especially considering that the competition itself is not only for Indonesian students but also Malaysian students,” Felicia said.

Felicia shared that for the competition, she brought up a personal project that had been in the works for about a year. The title adopted is “Learn How to Cook Through Webtoon for College Students.” The design is in the form of a short webtoon illustration that does not have a story but summarizes easy food recipes that can be followed by college students who are far from their families and have to be independent.
“This project is one of my projects that I am most proud of and has had several previous achievements, and this project was also formed from the desire to save my family cooking recipes in a unique way. So I think this project deserves to be introduced more widely through INDDEX,” Felicia said.
Unlike Felicia, Maria’s project is a group project. Maria said that her group won the mural design for Kampung Gajah, Perak, Malaysia. This competition was won by her group consisting of three Malaysians and three Indonesians from different universities.

When asked about the design ideas they made, Maria shared that they brought three ideas. Two hero-themed ideas and one landscape themed.
“The idea for this theme was given from the brief; then, my group wanted to show the heroes in Perak, namely Dato Maharaja Lela, Dato Sagor, and Pandak Indut. While for the holiday theme, we chose Tanjung Perak Harbor, Perak Lake, and Mount Bubu as the main sights. The three design ideas are supported by other elements such as taglines, flora and fauna, entertainment venues, food, dances, and symbols representing Perak, Malaysia,” Maria explained.
Maria’s group brought this design to show the unique things Perak has to offer, supported by the uniqueness of the area around Kampung Gajah by providing supporting elements. The design aims to briefly show visitors to Kampung Gajah about Perak in the form of a visual mural placed on the three main buildings in Kampung Gajah.
Had an exciting and memorable experience, Maria hopes that she can continue to stay close and connect with the Indonesian and Malaysian friends they made at the INDDEX Design Degree Show 2022. “The experience was really good! You can exchange opinions with other art lovers, really bond with them,” Maria concluded.
Felicia also conveyed her message and impression. She hopes that in the future, she can join competitions like INDDEX.
“It was quite a valuable experience for me. I also hope that the projects I carry can continue to achieve new achievements in the future,” Felicia concluded.
Once again, congratulations to Maria Estleia and Maria Felicia, as well as the team of students and lecturers of VCD UMN who attended the INDDEX event for their achievements! Hopefully, this achievement can encourage other students to compete and excel.
