May 20, 2022TANGERANG – It turns out it is just a myth that women can only have a career in certain fields. A 2015 UMN Computer Engineering Alumni, Veronica Dian Sari, broke that stereotype.
Computer engineering majors are often connected to masculinity or men. Veronica is a woman who is now a Data Engineer at Traveloka. Even though her team members are predominantly male, she says the work environment is very supportive and inclusive.
“Here, women are also given the same opportunity as men to share opinions and discuss,” Veronica shared.
Her father is a machine and electrical engineer who has inspired Veronica to pursue engineering. This interest started to appear when she was in junior high school, and it never died down until college.
While studying at UMN, Veronica also received the same feeling of security as in her work environment. Starting from supportive friends to lecturers who assess students’ abilities objectively, regardless of gender.
“Many say that the Engineering Study Program is difficult and only men can do it. But in my opinion, whether it’s Engineering or other study programs, it’s the same and not limited to a particular gender,” Veronica said.
It is proven that Veronica also excels in the Computer Engineering Study Program, even though she may be seen as a female minority. She once received a Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) scholarship, which sent her on a study visit to Germany in 2019.
In addition, Veronica also received various other benefits when studying at UMN. For example, she received scholarships on registration fees and the first semester of UMN, semester scholarships for 10% of the Highest GPA for semesters 5 and 7, and soft skills training through non-academic activities.
“We can be whoever we want as long as we want to try and work hard to achieve that dream. Don’t be afraid to enter Computer Engineering at UMN, even though I used to be a minority as a woman,” she said.
What’s more, the development of a computer-based system is indeed a necessity in the current world. This increase in need opens opportunities for every gender to contribute to improving the world’s quality of life. According to Veronica, this has also become the basis of her motivation to work in the engineering field.
The UMN Computer Engineering Study Program focuses on equipping students with software and programming knowledge, both in web and mobile forms. Not only that, but students will also be equipped with knowledge of Cloud, Network and Security, Hardware, and the latest curriculum.
