TANGERANG – The Conversation’s Health and Science Editor, Ahmad Nurhasim, gave a workshop to UMN lecturers at Collabo Space, UMN Building D, Monday (19/6). The workshop was titled “Writing Research Results in Popular Language for the Public.”
Researchers, including those from educational institutions, often face problems in “humanizing” the language of their scientific research results. This training is also essential to fill the scientific knowledge gap between researchers and ordinary people. Ahmad Nurhasim said this can happen because people have different levels of knowledge.
Language is one of the “opening roads” so everyone can understand each other. Ahmad also revealed several tips on the use of language in writing popular scientific articles, starting from straightforward, short, to simple language. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the explanation in popular articles must remain clear or not have multiple interpretations.
“The key is to never write in a field you are not good at. It’s called troubling yourself,” Ahmad said.

He said that there are actually many ideas for writing popular articles that are interesting to the public. One of them is topics related to the Sustainable Development Goals: poverty, hunger, health, education, gender, access to clean water, and others.
The point is that people tend to be interested in topics that are related to their daily lives. On the other hand, Ahmad said that writers must also determine their target audience in advance.
