About The Architecture Department
Architecture is a major that combines art and engineering. Architecture majors study the history and theory of design while gaining practical experience in creating layouts for buildings. Creativity, accuracy, and mathematics are essential in this field.
Architecture students will learn to draw 3D designs by hand or computer. At UMN, the architectural study program not only focuses on designing an aesthetic space for human use but also considers other aspects such as using natural resources, green buildings, and their impact on environmental sustainability. Students should also prioritize accessibility to consider people with disabilities and historical buildings; many architects do projects on historic buildings to preserve them.
But in general, architecture students will take classes in areas such as mathematics (including geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus), science (most likely physics and engineering), statistics, computer science (particularly 3D modeling and linear programming), and arts (such as drawing and art history).
