TANGERANG – The Faculty of Engineering and Informatics Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) and the Center for Young Scientists (CYS) Indonesia held another Banten Young Researcher Competition (Lomba Peneliti Belia Banten/LPB), with an increase of 77 research titles from the previous year’s 55 research titles. Divided into 7 scientific fields with a total of 143 participants this year (101 high school students and 42 junior high school students) from 22 schools in Banten. The event was held at the P.K. Ojong – Jakob Oetama Tower building D UMN, on Tuesday-Wednesday (September 19-20, 2023).
The Young Researcher Competition was held for high school or vocational school students in Banten province as a venue for young researchers to compete in presenting their research results. The participants conducted research per 7 predetermined fields, namely Economics, Sociology, Physics, Mathematics, Computer, Life Sciences, and Environment.
UMN Faculty of Engineering and Informatics Dean Niki Prastomo explained that UMN has another opportunity to work with CYS, which has experience conducting research competitions for students in Indonesia and internationally.
Niki hopes that LPB Banten can become a place to develop the talents of young researchers in Banten Province. As well as a medium for mutual discussion, learning, and collaboration between schools so that participants gain valuable experience and learn about research from the judges’ input during the preliminary and final round assessment process.
“For the winners, good luck at the national level. Improve, strengthen, and develop research for the National LPB and for the continuation of existing research,” said Niki.
The research that caught Niki’s attention was in the field of Physics, where the team researched the utilization of the Seebeck effect thermoelectric phenomenon that converts temperature differences into electrical energy. This research explores the possibility of converting waste into electrical energy, which aims to reduce waste and turn it into a useful energy source.

UMN Rector Ninok Leksono hopes that these teenagers can meet colleagues in other provinces from their research. They can still deliver excellent research and improve national economic development.
“It is no less important to contribute to advancing Indonesia’s field of knowledge,” said Ninok.
Director of CYS Monika Raharti said in her speech that in 2022, the number of participants from this competition who succeeded at the national level was 20% of all those who received awards. This number is quite large because we compete nationally from all provinces of Indonesia.
“This shows that the research that emerges from LPB UMN 2022 is of very good quality. We hope to see even better and more interesting research in this year’s LPB,” said Monika.
The national LPB Banten is planned to be held in November this year. Students from various schools throughout Indonesia will gather at UMN to compete their research results at the provincial level.
In this event, Monika also announced that the National LPB will be held in UMN. This year, the competition will be held offline again, which previously during the pandemic was done online.
“Seeing from UMN’s video profile at the beginning– that UMN students come from all over Indonesia. So I think it will be very interesting if so many students from various provinces gather here and are introduced to this extraordinary university,” said Monika.
The assessment was conducted by a jury consisting of UMN lecturers and a team from CYS. The preliminary round was conducted through the Research Poster Exhibition. Members of the Jury carried out poster assessment by assessing posters and asking questions to participants in front of their respective posters. The preliminary round produced 45 teams that entered the final round; the assessment criteria were:
- Ideas and uniqueness of research
- Research methodology
- Knowledge and insight of researchers related to their research
Then, the Final Round was conducted openly through research presentations in Indonesian. The presentation lasted for a maximum of 10 minutes, followed by a question and answer session for a maximum of 5 minutes with the Jury. The following are the assessment criteria:
- Idea and uniqueness of the research
- Research methodology
- Presentation technique and knowledge and insight of the researcher related to their research
