January 12, 2023Tangerang – Recruiters or companies are always looking for new, competent talents. This means that students or fresh graduates can get their dream job without having to apply first. To attract these talent scouts’ attention, you need to build a good CV or curriculum vitae and portfolio.
Through a Live Session with DQLab, last Thursday, December 15, 2022, the event invited Shella Teresya as a resource person and a Data Scientist at the Digitalization and Command Center of United Tractor Pandu Engineering, a member of Astra.
The session discussed several ways for students, fresh graduates, and those already working who wants to switch careers. The speakers shared tips on what they need to learn to attract the HRs of their dream company successfully.
Based on a McKinsey chart, Indonesia, in the digital era, is still in a lower position than other countries, with a relative score of 0.4. Meanwhile, in other countries, digitalization is already at a score of 0.6 to 0.7. Shella said a lack of digital talent causes this. Talking about digital talent and digitization, she said that digitalization is closely related to data.
Data that is snowballing turns out to open job opportunities for people with processing and analytical skills. There are two sectors that provide enormous opportunities for various types of data professions, namely manufacturing and retail.
“Students, fresh graduates, or workers who want to make a career switch can start looking for opportunities to work in these two sectors, although it doesn’t rule out that the data profession in the digital era like now is needed by all sectors,” Shella said.
According to Shella, several data professions will dominate the “future” for the next 5 to 10 years. The majority of those are in the data field, as data’s role in the growth of various sectors is important.
“Some of the professions that will be sought after and needed are Full Stack Engineers, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Engineers, Data Specialists, IOT Engineers, Robotic Engineers and others. Even so, there is one data profession that has experienced rapid growth and is increasingly sought after by companies, namely Data Analyst,” Shella said.
For a career as a Data Analyst, various things need to be prepared to attract recruiters. First, master the various skills needed. These skills range from using tools to a variety of soft skills, starting from using SQL, Excel, and Python, statistical skills, critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and data storytelling.
Behind all the skills learned, prospective data talent must demonstrate their ability through a data portfolio. The portfolio can be built by taking on various projects, followed by the skills used in the process.
“For example, you create a data project using SQL as one of the tools often used by Data Analysts. The collection of projects contained in your portfolio will increase credibility in the eyes of HR later,” Shella said.
Shella gives six ways to build a data portfolio based on learned skills. First, join the Data Analyst Bootcamp, where a mentor will help with the learning process and making a portfolio. Second, participating in the Data Analyst track.
Third, work on various cases according to skills. Fourth, storytell or share the projects taken on platforms such as Linkedin or other social media. Fifth, build a CV that is to the point and not long-winded. Finally, build an attractive and interactive portfolio to increase your credibility.
