TANGERANG – On March 17, 2023, at the Lecture Hall of Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN), Student Support UMN gave a seminar themed “Anxiety: The Wall Behind Your Happiness.”
Currently, the issue of Mental Health is a concern for many people, especially regarding Anxiety. Anxiety is a mental health disorder characterized by constant anxiety, fear, and excessive worry. An anxiety Disorder can be experienced by anyone, including students.
According to a survey conducted by a research team from the Faculty of Health, University of Indonesia, more than 95% of young people aged 16-24 years have experienced anxiety symptoms, and around 88% have experienced depression. With the anxiety-themed seminar, Angel, UMN’s Internal Student Affairs Manager, hopes that students can find answers to all their anxiety-related questions.
“I hope today’s seminar can be the answer to all your questions and worries.” Angel said.
The seminar “Anxiety: The Wall Behind Your Happiness” was delivered by Sonny Tirta Luzanil, M.Si., a Clinical Psychologist currently working at Student Support UMN. “There is an uncomfortable feeling of danger that will occur in the future so that it affects the mood, when we don’t even know if that danger will happen or not, whether it is dangerous or not,” Sonny said, explaining what anxiety means.
Anxiety is divided into three types, namely Neurotic Anxiety, Realistic Anxiety, and Moral Anxiety. Starting from Neurotic Anxiety, this anxiety is anxiety about a danger that we do not know whether the danger exists or not.
“For example, if we meet lecturer A, before we meet him/her we already think oh surely this lecturer will be angry, will be annoying, but not necessarily.”
While Realistic Anxiety is true and real that danger will occur, “For example, you are in a vehicle where the driver drives at high speed, you are afraid due to anxiety, fear, or worry that there will be a collision, like that,” Sonny continued.
And finally, Moral Anxiety is related to morals and ego, “You have morals which you have had from the past, like doing something without cheating. But your friends are cheating, so you become anxious, thinking, ‘should I cheat too? Will my answer be right if I cheat?’” Sonny explained.
“When discussing anxiety, this can usually be related to phobias. You have a phobia of cats because you’ve been scratched, so every time you see a cat, you’re anxious, afraid that the cat will scratch you,” Sonny said, explaining the relationship between anxiety and phobia.
Sonny also explained that there is a disorder identical to college students, namely psychomatism, with symptoms of the body feeling feverish, palpitations, nausea, and headaches. But, when examined by a doctor, nothing hurts. This disorder is caused by several things, namely traumatic experiences, heredity, personality disorders, certain diseases, and consumption of certain drugs that have side effects on brain activation.
The seminar with the theme “Anxiety: The Wall Behind Your Happiness” raised by Student Support UMN ended with a question and answer session with students regarding their anxiety, which Sonny answered directly.
In the end, Student Support also distributed barcodes containing several questions related to anxiety experienced by students to be further reviewed whether there are students who have excessive anxiety that needs to be referred to professionals.
