TANGERANG (10/7/2023) – Sister Angela Siallagan, a Cumlaude Student majoring in Digital Journalism at Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) class of 2019, has successfully published a book on the struggle of female reporters in conflict areas as her final project.
Sr. Angela Siallagan FCJM, whose real name is Juni Darliah Siallagan, is a Journalism student at Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN). During her studies, she actively honed her literacy and journalistic skills by becoming one of the campus reporters at Ultimagz and Kompas Muda. She is also part of the UMN English Student Council (UESC) and several other organizations on and off campus.
Her passion for sharing ideas and inspiring people through the strokes of her hands and her natural talent as a writer in various media that the UMN leaders also urged to develop made Sr. Angela Siallagan choose the Digital Journalism major at Multimedia Nusantara University.
So far, there are three books written by herself and seven other books that have been published together with Sr. Angela’s colleagues. The book “Women Journalists in the Whirlpool of Conflict” is Sr. Angela’s final project successfully published by Kompas Book Publisher. This book tells the story of four great female journalists who specialize in covering and dissecting cases in conflict areas. The four female journalists are:
- Desi Fitriani, Executive Producer at Metro TV
- Irene Sarwindaningrum, Investigative journalist at Kompas Daily.
- Maria Rita Hasugian, Former Tempo Journalist and Founder of Media KatongNTT.com
- Nani Afrida, Coordinator of the Gender, Children and Marginalized Groups Division of AJI Indonesia, member of the Gender Council Asia Pacific of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), and Executive Director of Konde.co.

“Women are important to enliven the journalism profession. This book is one of the efforts to give a stage to female journalists. By reading this book, we can better understand the resilience of female journalists in conquering various difficulties,” Sr. Angela said.
It is not enough for women journalists deployed to conflict areas to only have qualified journalistic skills. They are required to have extra skills. Careful to listen to record facts and truths, wise in approaching, have guts, courage, and remain introspective.
In addition to the book “Women Journalists in the Vortex of Conflict,” together with other sisters, she wrote the book “Cahaya Sabda” (The Light of the Word). In her book, Sr. Angela offers daily reflections with spiritual points according to the calendar set by the Church and published annually. Through this book, Sr. Angela conveys her mission, “I and the other Sisters involved in making the book want to invite us every day to set aside a maximum of 30 minutes a day for a quiet moment to build a spiritual life.”
Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN), under the Kompas Gramedia Group, convinced Sr. Angela that UMN was the right campus to study journalism. “Initially, I was looking around for campuses in Jakarta and its surroundings with Journalism majors. When I found UMN and knew it was part of Kompas Gramedia, I immediately fell in love,” Sr. Angela said.
Sr. Angela also admitted that the facilities and Student Activity Units (UKM) at UMN Campus are very diverse. Students can choose according to their needs and interests that can support improving skills according to their majors.
Sr. Angela’s perseverance during her four years of study at UMN made her a recipient of an achievement scholarship and a Cumlaude degree. From the total number of students in a batch, 5% of students with the highest Semester Achievement Index (IPS) scores will receive merit scholarships. The merit scholarship program provided by UMN to its students motivates Sr. Angela to maintain her grades until the end of her studies.
