October 25, 2021TANGERANG – Ultigraph UMN 2021, an activity held every two years by students of UMN Visual Communication Design Study Program, again held various seminars and workshops. “Shifting Strategy Through Pandemic” became one of a series of seminars held virtually on Saturday afternoon (23/10/21). On this occasion, Ultigraph UMN invited senior lecturer in graphic design and digital media department at MARA Perak Branch University of Technology, Dr. Shahrel Nizar Bin Baharam and Head of UMN Visual Communication Design Study Program, Mohammad Rizaldi.
Through this seminar packaged in the form of speech degrees, Shahrel and Rizaldi shared tips on changing designers’ strategies to survive in new situations, especially in this pandemic situation. Actually, Shahrel revealed that we were already dealing with this massive technology before the Covid-19 pandemic. However, he said the pandemic situation is accelerating and forcing that change.
“Pandemics push us further into the future. We are learning to adapt quickly to these technologies,” rizaldi continued, agreeing with Shahrel’s view.
Shahrel and Rizaldi said this change also had an impact on designers, both positively and negatively. However, they say designers must be ready to step out of their comfort zone to continue to thrive in this ever-changing situation.
“You have to get out of your comfort zone to find people who can give you design work. The shift is already there, the graphic design has also changed. If you don’t change your mindset, you’ll leave your design thinking and go too far behind,” Shahrel said.

To that end, Shahrel and Rizaldi also shared some strategies that can be done to deal with the shift in this era of technological development. The first is to enrich yourself by learning new things and new languages. According to Rizaldi, this can open up opportunities to collaborate with many people. Then, the next tip is to continue to develop skills in the field of digital and social technology. It is not limited to the technology used for designing. Then, have an entrepreneurial mindset to open creative business opportunities independently.
“Then, one last thing. You have to be ready with yourself and promote yourself about what your strengths are,” Shahrel added.
Reporting from Instagram @ultigraph, Ultigraph is the largest graphic design festival organized by students under the auspices of UMN’s Visual Communication Design Study Program.
