November 15, 2022For those planning to have a weekend getaway or a staycation to enjoy a comfortable atmosphere and excellent service, you will be dealing with hospitality terminologies you may have rarely heard of before. In all activities, starting from booking a hotel, choosing a hotel room, checking in and checking out, each has its own terms. It is not surprising that guests are often unfamiliar or confused with the terms.
It’s not just people looking to leisure in a hotel that must be familiar with hospitality terms. Hospitality students, of course, who are going to start their hospitality studies also need to know the world of hospitality and its terminologies. Many hospitality terms originated from foreign languages , such as English and French, which may be confusing.
It is essential that you don’t just know but understand the terminologies we will share below. This time, UMN will share 5 terminologies fairly common in hospitality. Read along!
Check-In and Check-Out
We enter the first terms in the world of hospitality, namely, Check In and Check Out. For those going on a vacation and are planning to book a hotel, you must know this term. Please note that check-in is the process of guests officially arriving at the hotel and entering their belongings into the room. Furthermore, there is also the term check-out, where guests leave the hotel, removing their stuff from the room and paying the hotel bills.

According to Tiket.com, hotel reservations are made at 14.00 for check-ins and check-outs at 12.00. If you ask why the check-in time is at most two, like 12 or earlier, it is because the housekeeping staff needs 15-30 minutes to clean and arrange guest rooms that have been booked. Moreover, the number of staff is not proportional to the number of rooms needed to be clean and ready to be occupied.

Single Beds and Double Beds
After choosing your hotel, you will be directed to select and order a room. Guests who have never ordered a hotel room before may be confused about selecting the type of room. Why did sleeping become complicated with the many types of rooms? Be careful not to order the wrong type of room. It’s good to know each of the room types first. In hotels, single-bed and double-bed room types are the most common.

A single-bed is sufficient for one person, usually queen-size or smaller. While the double bed is the size of a king-size bed which is enough for two people. Some rooms offer twin beds and two single-size beds. The twin room type is suitable for those who stay with friends or colleagues and want to sleep separately. So book the right room, okay?
Booking and Fully Booked
In addition, there is also the term booking which you must have heard often. Booking is also a term for guests to book a room when staying at a hotel. Some may wonder, is there a difference with reservation? The difference between booking and reservation is just the terms.

The term booking is usually used for reservations in the form of tickets, such as booking train tickets, plane tickets, cinema tickets, concert tickets, and others. Then, the term reservation is usually used for reservations that are more private, like hotel rooms and fine dining in restaurants. If you see the term “fully booked” when booking a hotel, it means that the room you chose has been fully booked by hotel guests.
A la Carte and Buffet
In hotels, guests will be served a variety of food presentation styles. Most commonly are a la carte and buffet. You may have heard of these terms as you’ll see the terms in restaurants or cafes.
A buffet is a food serving system where food is placed in a public area. Guests can choose the type of food they want and grab it themselves. Buffets are often served in crowded places such as hotels, restaurants, and other important events, like weddings.
