South Lebak, November 19, 2024—To increase children’s disaster awareness and preparedness, especially for tsunamis, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), in collaboration with the South Lebak Mitigation Group (Gugus Mitigasi Lebak Selatan/GMLS), held the Patriot Siaga event at (Sekolah Dasar Negri/SDN) 1 Situregen Public Primary School. The event involved students in grades 1 to 6, with various fun and interactive educational sessions aiming to equip them with basic knowledge of the steps to take in the face of natural disasters.
The activity began with a workshop themed “3S: Ready, Safe, Arrived,” led by Resha as a resource person. In this session, Resha delivered material on preparing for disasters and ensuring one’s and others’ safety. This workshop was designed in an interesting and easy-to-understand way for students, namely playing while learning, so they could quickly understand the importance of disaster preparedness, especially tsunamis.
After the workshop session, the event continued with a practicum session for 3rd and 4th grade students. In this session, the children drew an evacuation map path. By drawing an evacuation map, students learn to recognize and understand the path that must be taken in the event of a disaster and the safe points around them. This activity not only sharpens the children’s creativity but also provides practical understanding, which is very important for their preparedness.
In addition, the students participated in Tas Siaga mini-games, where they learned about each important item contained in an emergency bag that must be carried in the event of a disaster.
According to Abah Lala, Chairman of the South Lebak Mitigation Group (GMLS), activities like this are very important, especially in tsunami-prone areas like South Lebak.
“They must better recognize the risks at school and at home that they face when living in a tsunami-prone area. Children must understand and prepare themselves to face potential disasters. This is important so that they not only know what to do but can also act quickly and appropriately when an emergency comes,” Abah Lala said.
As a token of appreciation for the good participation and understanding, the event was closed with the distribution of prizes. Prizes were given to students who answered questions correctly, drew the best evacuation map, and correctly understood the items in the alert bag. The prize distribution aimed to motivate the children to be more aware and prepared for disasters.
To close the event, all participants, resource persons, and organizers gathered for a group photo session. This moment not only captured the togetherness during the event but also symbolized the success of the Patriot Siaga event in equipping the younger generation with the knowledge and skills to face disasters.
With this event, it is hoped that children will be more prepared and alert when facing disasters and understand the importance of safety for themselves and others. Patriot Siaga is a positive step in building a community that is more responsive to disaster threats in the future.
