Many myths and facts about architects are often misunderstood in our society. Should Architecture Children Be Good at Math and Physics? Yes, you have to be good at math and physics if you want to major in architecture. However, you don’t have to be a professional at it. In the architectural major, you will learn mathematics and physics courses. But don’t worry, the mathematics in this department is not as complicated as in pure mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics. Physics in the department of architecture is not as terrifying as the material in the department of pure physics, engineering physics, and physics education.
For those of you who are still curious about majoring in Architecture but are still hesitant because there are many scary “myths” about this major, you should read this article until the end!
Myth and Architect Facts 1: Prospective Architects must be good at drawing
FACT: Excellence at drawing doesn’t guarantee an architect’s success.
An architect is synonymous with drawings and designs. But the myth that an architect must be good at drawing is not entirely true. Being good at drawing doesn’t guarantee that you can be more reliable in this major than your friends in the same department who are mediocre? Good at drawing here in the sense of being good at making pictures such as anime, murals, and so on. Then, how can an artist draw but not have to be proficient at drawing? In the architecture department, you have to be able to draw, but you don’t have to be an expert like the art and interior design students. The most important thing when studying in the architecture department is innovation, creativity, imagination, and a breakthrough to design a new room/building that is different from the others. But it can’t just be different from the others, of course. All these imaginations must be realized with logic and mathematical and physical calculations.
Architect MYTH and Fact 2: Architectural Tools are Expensive
FACT: Absolutely! Be prepared to save.
The cost of studying in the architecture department is not as expensive as studying in the medical department. However, you still have to spend money to buy equipment commonly used by architecture students, such as drawing pens, mechanical pencils, rapido, rulers, tubes, and various types of paper used for college purposes. In the first semester of the architecture department, you will be presented with a list of tools that must be owned to support smoothness during learning. This list of equipment is not one or two, but many. And the prices vary, from cheap to draining the pocket kind of expense. If you want to use durable enough equipment that doesn’t damage your work, you have to be willing to spend more. For example, for a triangular ruler, the price is above IDR 100,000 for a size 12. And you are usually required to have triangular rulers of various sizes, for example, size 8 or 10, size 6, and others. In addition, your laptop or PC must have RAM above 4 GB for smooth drawing designs in AutoCAD, SkethUp, BIM, and others. 4 GB of RAM or below is often slow and does not respond.
Architect MYTH and Fact 3: Architects Are Not Interior Designers
FACT: This is TRUE! Please note that there is a difference between the two!
Some people often misunderstand the duties of an architect and interior design. Just because the architect is in charge of designing the house, many think that the architect can also design the house’s interior. Architects can indeed draw and design, but their expertise is more in analyzing a building so that it can be built with a particular design so that it can be sturdy and aesthetically pleasing. Each design drawn cannot be applied at random, but calculations must be made, such as how heavy the mass of bricks or concrete stones must be used so that the building does not collapse and what wood should be used to support the roof of the building and so on.
Meanwhile, the interior designer’s job is purely to draw, although it is necessary to take some measurements but not as detailed and complex as an architect. So if you like to draw and design a room to make it look neat and beautiful, it’s better to join the interior design department, not the architect major.
Myth and Architect Fact 4: Male-dominated
FACT: Yep, this is TRUE, too! If you are a girl, be prepared to get along with them.
Those who want to major in architecture need to know that the number of female students in this field is not as many as the number of male students. In fact, this applies not only to architectural engineering but to other engineering majors. If you graduated from a vocational high school, you probably already know that men dominate this major, so it may not be surprising.
But if you graduated from regular high school, this may be new news for you. So, ladies, be prepared to be in a male-dominated environment (and rock it!).
Myth and Architect Fact 5: Promising Job and Business Prospects
FACT: That’s right! You will get job prospects along with increasing housing needs.
With the increase in development projects, especially during the current governmental administration, the career prospects and expectations of the architectural world are very optimistic. Not to mention the large population of Indonesia, with plenty of needs for housing developments and public facilities. Competition is everywhere, but don’t be discouraged. Keep innovating, improve your skills and abilities, work in building spaces, build your business, and achieve extraordinary results.
The architecture department is considered prestigious, and for that, there are a lot of enthusiasts. However, in addition to high demand, this department is also often misunderstood. Knowing the Myths and facts of the Department of Architecture makes you more confident in choosing this major. Happy exploring!
