June 29, 2022Tangerang – The South Lebak Mitigation Group (Gugus Mitigasi Lebak Selatan/GMLS) with the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN), held a mobile journalism for disaster journalism workshop at Villa Hejo Kiarapayung, Panggarangan Village, Panggarangan District, Lebak Regency, Banten Province on Sunday and Monday, June 26-27 2022. This activity was attended by 28 young Bayah participants, some of whom were high school and vocational high school students.
Entitled “Empowered Communities, Beware of Disasters,” this training activity is one of the UMN Community Service programs facilitated by the UMN Digital Journalism Study Program team with facilitators Yearry Panji Setianto, Ph.D., Adi Wibowo Octavianto, S.Sos., M.Sc., and Albertus Magnus Prestianta, SI.Kom., M.A. They provided material about the basics of journalism, managing disaster data and information, and using mobile technology in disaster journalism.
Anis Faisal Reza, the Chair of GMLS, said that this activity is a form of community collaboration with universities in Banten Province who are concerned and understand the importance of increasing preparedness knowledge to face potential disasters in South Banten.
“This workshop is a form of collaboration between the UMN campus and GMLS, who both have a concern that disaster preparedness knowledge is important for residents of South Lebak, where the area has the potential for megathrust that can cause a tsunami,” Anis said.
Agreeing with Anis, Andy Firmansyah from the Institute for Research and Community Service of UMN also said that campuses must be more proactive in helping and strengthening each other for all community initiatives that can provide broad benefits, especially regarding disasters where Indonesia is a “supermarket of disasters.”
This activity is one of a series of programs in the second year of community service carried out by the Faculty of Communications and the Faculty of Business of UMN in collaboration with GMLS. It is planned that this multi-year program will involve other faculties at UMN to actively and continuously support the preparedness, disaster response, and post-disaster recovery efforts.
