UMN Campus Media News Portal ULTIMAGZ.com Has a New Face
May 4, 2015Being the next generation of a responsible nation can not only be done by getting good academic achievements. Having a high concern for the preservation of Indonesia’s nature is also a must-have character.
Mapala UMN is aware of the marine diversity in the country. Indonesia as a maritime country is rich in the beauty of the sea and all its contents. The tourism sector in this field is growing rapidly. It’s just that the indifference of tourists and the surrounding community to the natural environment makes the beauty of the sea eroded.
This then moved Mapala UMN which is incorporated in Nature Activists to preserve marine life in Indonesia. One way is to hold a discussion forum themed “Young Generation Realizes The Harmony of Indonesian Maritime Life”. The discussion held to coincide with Earth Day, Wednesday (22/4) yesterday took place in the UMN Lecture Hall. This event was Hendra Yusran Siry as Directorate General of Marine, Coastal, and Small Islands, Dithia Sofia as Princess Bahari 2012, and Muhammad Salim as Chairman of the Forum of Environmental Care Communities as speakers.
At this event, Nature Activists were given further education about the maritime world of Indonesia and its development. “It is hoped that this forum can educate Nature Activists about the development of the maritime world in Indonesia. Not only stop there, they can also come together to build a better marine life in the future,” said Muhammad Salim, Chairman of the Forum of Environmental Care Communities.
Furthermore, the Directorate General of Marine, Coastal and Small Islands Hendra Yusran Siry explained about handling damage to Indonesia’s coastal areas. According to him, there are five programs that will be carried out by the government in handling the coast. The five programs are mangrove rehabilitation, mangrove restoration and learning centers (PRPM), beach protection development, community empowerment and sea love movement.
Another thing with Dithi Sofia, Princess Bahari 2012, stated that the importance of preserving for the next survival.” During this time many environmental conservation failed because of the lack of sustainable action from the environmental conservation movement,” he said. Dithi also invites the younger generation to jump directly into environmental conservation in Indonesia.
As a concrete action to save the sustainability of Indonesia’s marine nature, the Nature Activists who are UMN students will plant mangroves on Karya Island, Thousand Islands on Sunday (26/4). That is why, in this discussion forum also the participants were given information about mangrove plants and how to plant them. The forum concluded with a plaque and goodie bag from Nestle to sources.
Congratulations on being the next generation of people who care about the environment, Mapala UMN! (*)
