March 18, 2024Learn to Care for Your Mental Health through CDC UMN’s “Mental Health Management’” Seminar
March 18, 2024Tangerang – The data analytics profession has become increasingly popular in recent years. Interestingly, those who come from not only IT backgrounds but also NON-IT backgrounds and beginners have now dabbled in the world of data. Data analytics has become a key element in strategic decision-making across industries. With a good understanding of data, a data analytics professional can provide invaluable insights to their company.
Through DQLab‘s online event on the Free Class program: Data Science (Batch 29) entitled “Get to Know More: Career in Data Analytics” invited Ahmad Habib Batama Putra, a professional Data Analyst practitioner at Sekolah.mu, to present on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, by providing further and in-depth explanations about the Data Analyst profession and his career journey in the Data field.
With this advanced technology, data analytics makes it an easier profession to access. In general, Data Analytics is a team that contributes to helping further business development. Habib explained that the Data Analytics team is divided into several professions, including Data Analyst and Data Scientist. Data Analytics can help stakeholders understand data, patterns, and trend content based on data and make the right decisions without prejudice.
After that, Habib gave an entry point to friends who wanted to jump in and have a career as a data practitioner in the industry. There was further discussion: “Why are data analytics and this field so much in demand?”
The first point in his explanation is that many industries/companies are starting to realize that they have a lot of customer data assets but don’t know what to do with these datasets. With the existence of data practitioners who help, companies are increasingly aware of the existence of Big Data, which is so important in providing insights related to their customers.
“Even now, Big Data is starting to be sold to several industries. This can be very helpful for offering products they (industries/companies) make, for example, quantitative datasets from customer questionnaire results or qualitative data, namely the results of observations and other notes from problems faced. With more awareness, business people began looking for someone to help them get actionable insights,” Habib explained.
In the second point, Habib explained why data analytics is in demand. One reason is that the data field requirements are quite open, thus providing many broad career opportunities. This can work in various industries, such as information technology, finance, hospitality, and health.
“For example, like me, who is not from an IT background, the field is quite open as long as we provide evidence through a data portfolio. From this data portfolio, we can see what things (related to data analytics) we have done and how we can provide results. So, for friends not from a statistics or IT background, don’t be afraid! Because the job is related to technology, there will be quite a lot of opportunities to work remotely,” said Habib while describing his experience in climbing the science of Data Analytics.
To further discuss the data analytics profession, Habib also shared his responsibilities as a data analyst in the industry and, in general, what he does daily. Habib explained that the first thing to do is to be able to ensure that the data and dashboards used as a benchmark by the business team can run well. Some of the tools he uses are Power BI, Tableau, Google Studio (now Looker Studio), and others.
Then, as a Data Analyst, Habib conducts research for insight and presents the study’s results to the business team. He continued, explaining that although not all Data Analysts perform tasks, Habib specifically builds custom dashboards daily.
“I do some fairly advanced coding on this task because I have to display charts that are more customized in nature. So not only using Python, SQL, and R, but there are also other tools that I use, this also makes me more interested and happy in the analytics team in my job. So, I gained a lot of new knowledge that the data field is not only about seeing and reading data but also about another focus where we can display data through graphs that users use,” Habib said.
Closing the session at this event, Habib shared his exciting stories and experiences from his one-and-a-half years as a professional data analyst in the industry. He first feels and expresses that about half the time at work is spent making SQL syntax (doing queries). This is also an important tip for friends who want to join a data analytics team or work as a data team in the industry.
“Then the second point that I think is really important is even communication. Between data colleagues, stakeholders, with people who request from other business units. Usually, the data team is central and neutral in the company. So, when we have any request, we need a lot of discussion to find out the business context and also when we deliver the results (data analysis) according to the audience. We should not use terminology that is too advanced and complex that they don’t need to know. So, as much as possible, keep practicing good public speaking,” Habib said.
From the many stories of Habib’s journey, he did not stop there to remind participants who also wanted to explore data analytics to have the opportunity to have a career in the industry. This structured and comprehensive learning support can support career preparation for UMN friends.
