March 18, 2024Seminar Presentation on Mental Health (Doc. UMN)
Tangerang, March 6, 2024 – In Lecture Hall Building C, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN), students witnessed a mental health issue seminar. This seminar was organized by the Career Development Center (CDC) as a form of their concern for students’ mental health.
Lately, incidents of students experiencing mental disorders and ending their lives are not a rare phenomenon. The sad news often appears in the media and illustrates the mental challenges faced by most students. This problem is further reinforced by data obtained from the Alvara Research Center survey, which shows that Generation Z is more prone to stress and anxiety compared to previous generations.
Recognizing the urgency of mental health issues among students, UMN CDC initiated a seminar that discussed mental health management strategies. This event is a forum for students to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of caring for mental health in dealing with pressures and demands inside and outside the academic environment.
Budi Invites Students to Live Actively (Doc. UMN)
The seminar was attended by Budi Hermawan, M.M., MBA, as the main speaker and the director of PT Mecosin Indonesia. With a lengthy life and career experience background, Budi shared valuable knowledge and experience and provided relevant insights on mental health and strategies to maintain psychological balance in the midst of daily activities.
Budi shared seven essential steps to maintain mental health that can be applied in everyday life.
First, he suggested leading an active lifestyle by exercising regularly. The first step is to adopt an active lifestyle. Moving a lot helps improve the body’s metabolism. This is important because the nutrients consumed will be well dispersed throughout the body, especially to the brain. When blood circulation is smooth, a person’s mood tends to be better because the blood will deliver oxygen to the brain, thus triggering the release of endorphins that can improve mood naturally.
The second step is to drink more water. It is important to keep the body hydrated as its organs can only function optimally if the body’s water needs are well met. Cognitive function improves when the body’s organs work efficiently, including the brain. Thus, when the brain functions well, individuals will feel better overall.
The third step in maintaining mental health is to pay attention to nutrient-rich consumption. Choosing foods and beverages that have high nutritional value is very important. Knowing the composition of foods, including calorie and protein content, will help individuals make wiser choices regarding their nutritional intake.
The fourth step to emphasize is adequate rest. It is recommended to avoid staying up late and forcing the body to work too hard. By giving the body sufficient rest, stress levels can significantly decrease.
The fifth step is the importance of self-control in managing stress and emotions. Budi emphasizes that one way to achieve this is to take a moment and try to think calmly. In addition, it is also possible to use various means, such as worship or meditation, to help achieve emotional balance.
The sixth step to managing mental health is to find friends who can provide support and comfort. Friends have a role in providing emotional support when needed. It is essential to choose good friends, as the right friends can be good listeners and can be trusted.
The last step explained is the importance of adequate sun exposure to obtain vitamin D, which can contribute to maintaining mood stability. In addition, exposure to sunlight also positively impacts sleep quality, resulting in deeper sleep and refreshing wakefulness. Another benefit is the ability of the sun to reduce stress triggers.
Budi reminded all seminar participants to start healthy mental management practices. He emphasized that by doing this, one’s quality of life will improve significantly. It is necessary to focus on the good things in life and believe that tomorrow will be better than today. Thus, one can develop an optimistic attitude when facing various challenges and difficulties that may arise daily.
In addition, he also advised on how to behave when seeing friends or relatives who may be experiencing stress or depression. Budi suggested accompanying the person and being a good listener if they want to talk. He emphasized the importance of not judging or trivializing the problems experienced by the individual. By listening without judgment, we can provide meaningful support and help them feel heard and supported in dealing with the difficulties they are experiencing.
