AUSTRALIA – Universitas Multimedia Nusantara’s (UMN) U-Tapis team, represented by Dr. Niknik Mediyawati, M.Hum. and Randi Ramliyana, M.Pd., attended the Indonesian Language Teachers Conference in Australia. The event was organized by the Victoria Indonesian Language Teacher Association (VILTA), an incorporated association established in 1970 as an effort to improve Indonesian language teachers in Victoria, Australia. The event took place in the Yara room, Amora Hotel, Melbourne, Australia, on Friday (26/4/2024).
Education in the digital era now involves computer information technology and the presence of artificial intelligence (AI). As part of digital technology, it can help international students learn Indonesian through language error filtering applications.
On this occasion, U-Tapis, as a research output in the form of an Indonesian language error filter application, was introduced.
Conference participants had good enthusiasm when given the opportunity to try the application, which currently has 11 language error filter applications, namely U-Tapis Kata Baku, U-Tapis Kata Depan, U-Tapis Kata Majemuk, U-Tapis Kata Terikat, U-Tapis Saltik, U-Tapis Konjungsi, U-Tapis Peluluhan Kata, U-Tapis Kata Keterangan, U-Tapis Kalimat, Web U-Tapis I, and Web U-Tapis II.
The main speaker from Deakin University, Dr. Paul S. Thomas, welcomed the birth of U-Tapis, which can be useful in maintaining good and correct Indonesian language rules.
“I believe this application can help the Government or Language Agency maintain and preserve good and correct Indonesian language rules,” he said.
In addition, an Indonesian language teacher, Mickey, also expressed appreciation for the application, which was funded through UMN Internal Research, Matching Fund, Kedaireka 2022, and Dikti 2024 Grants. Mickey hopes that U-Tapis can exist alongside similar spell-check applications in Microsoft Word or Google.
In contrast to Paul and Mickey, Bea Awiati, a senior Indonesian teacher, they were reminded that U-Tapis can be a good application for the quality of the Indonesian language of leaders and public figures so that they become a good example in speaking Indonesian.

The application, which was tested at Tribunnews.com and by international students at Damascus College Ballarat, Australia, was originally developed to help journalists and editors produce news so that information is conveyed quickly and language rules are used correctly.
However, in its development, the U-Tapis application can also be offered and used as a teaching medium for international students learning Indonesian. The application, which was developed with computing and machine learning, is expected to be a medium that excites and improves the Indonesian language proficiency of international students.
