Menteng, Jakarta – Youth and Young Professionals (DRR) are projected to have a significant role in the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) sector, primarily through the fields of Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation (SETI).
Recognizing the importance of the disaster risk reduction (DRR) sector’s importance for fulfilling the SDGs, Universitas Multimedia Nusantara (UMN) continues to encourage its students to participate in collaborative activities in this field.
One concrete step in this effort is the participation of 3 lecturers and 13 students of UMN’s Communication Science Study Program as part of the organizing committee of The 3rd International Workshop/Training on Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation for Disaster and Climate Resilience on December 4-8, 2023. The event is organized by UNESCO, BRIN, and the U-Inspire Alliance, supported by various collaborators, including UMN.
The 3rd International Workshop/Training on Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation for Disaster and Climate Resilience on December 4-8, 2023, is an international workshop that aims to strengthen the role of DRR in disaster resilience building through SETI and discuss potential solutions to existing disaster problems.
The workshop also acts as an impetus for DRRs to strengthen cross-border and multidisciplinary collaboration for DRR in Asia and the Pacific, which will specifically address issues of inequality, interregional cooperation, and international cooperation.
A total of 111 participants from Afghanistan, Central Asia, China, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Nigeria, Philippines, Timor Leste, Vietnam, and Laos joined the event.
The supporting factor that also encourages UMN to send student representatives to participate in this activity is the role of students as youth and communication practitioners, which is crucial for the development of action in the field of DRR in the future.
This was also emphasized by the Secretary of UMN’s Strategic Communications Study Program, Irwan Fakhruddin, in his presentation at the closing panel of The 3rd International Workshop/Training on Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation for Disaster and Climate Resilience on December 8, 2023.

UMN is committed to always taking part in cross-sector, cross-institution, and cross-country collaborations in realizing equal ability to deal with global disaster and climate problems through practices in the role of tridharma (research, education, and community service),” Irwan said.
The student group consisting of Jason Adiwimarta Torar, Rebeca Amanda, Cindy Oktaviani, Dyna Muliani Tjahyadi, Fensy Winly Putri, Hani Metakarin, Jhosheline, Raden Khairunnisa Nurbaiti, Sheren Gho, Sindy Monica, Stephanie Shannonly, Verent Patricia, and Verlyn Hidayat acted as the Public Communications division in organizing the event.
They were also responsible for the Media Relations and Social Media functions of The 3rd International Workshop/Training on Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation for Disaster and Climate Resilience.
With the guidance of three lecturers from UMN’s Communication Studies Program, namely Irwan Fakhruddin, Maria Advenita Gita Elmada, and Nathaniel Antonio Parulian, the thirteen students carried out various tasks related to Media Relations and Social Media, such as preparing and publishing press releases, organizing press conferences and talk shows in several media, creating social media content plans, and producing and publishing content on The 3rd International Workshop/Training on Youth and Young Professionals in Science, Engineering, Technology, and Innovation for Disaster and Climate Resilience social media.
In addition to participating in the activity as the organizing committee, the thirteen students also had the opportunity to expand their connections and establish relationships with many Youth and Young Professionals who are representatives of various countries and participate in various activities related to DRR, such as visiting BPBD DKI Jakarta and TWA Mangrove Angke Kapuk to plant mangroves.
