August 17, 2022Universities in Tangerang must adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic, especially regarding the teaching and learning process. You may have heard of universities applying the hybrid campus, hybrid learning, or blended learning to adapt. It could be that your campus will or has already implemented this concept. This article will explain what a hybrid campus is and the university in Tangerang that applies it.
What is Hybrid Campus?
Also known as hybrid learning, distance learning, or blended learning, a hybrid campus is a campus that implements a lecture process that combines on-campus and online learning. Hybrid learning is not new but has been widely implemented since the pandemic. Hybrid learning is carried out by applying online and offline lectures where lecturers and some students will come to campus, and some other students will join the lectures virtually.
Asynchronous learning can also be added where e-learning will be used. Students will be asked to do assignments through e-learning and watch recordings of lecture material pre-recorded by the lecturer (also known as blended learning).

Benefits of Hybrid Campus
Even though the pandemic has subsided, hybrid learning can still be applied and beneficial for students, lecturers, and campuses. What are the benefits?
- Convenience and Accessibility
With hybrid lectures, students and lecturers can teach anywhere and anytime. In a pandemic, this provides an opportunity for students and lecturers to continue to carry out learning and teaching activities without risking contracting the virus. Even in non-pandemic conditions, hybrid learning can allow students who may have a disability or illness to continue to attend the entire course. Students and lecturers who may already be married, have additional jobs, or have other responsibilities will also benefit because they can take care of their families and work without having to be hampered by lectures.
- Cheaper
Less activity on campus will reduce tuition costs. In addition, online courses help students and campus staff reduce transportation and boarding costs.
- Opportunity to go international
Campuses can easily expand their network abroad by applying hybrid campus or digital learning courses. This allows students from any country to join the course. Can’t find a suitable lecturer to teach a particular course? Or have trouble finding qualified staff? Campuses can expand their network and recruit lecturers and staff from abroad.
Campuses That Implement Hybrid Learning
Seeing the improved pandemic condition, many campuses in Indonesia and abroad implement hybrid campus/hybrid learning. In fact, some countries have allowed full face-to-face lectures by implementing strict health protocols. Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) is one of the campuses that implements hybrid lectures.
