April 8, 2022Discussing Careers and Works in the Architect World, HIMARS UMN Holds a Webinar with the Founder of the LABO Design Bureau
April 12, 2022TANGERANG – The Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) Architecture Study Program held an external review of students’ final projects on Friday (08/04/22). The external reviewer invited is Aswin Indraprastha, a member of the Indonesian Architects Council and a lecturer in Architecture at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB).
This external review provides learning opportunities, especially for UMN architecture students who will soon carry out their final projects. They can learn a lot from seeing their seniors’ design process and watching how a professional reviews the final projects. This will help them know what to keep in mind and avoid when working on their final projects.
“This event can be a benchmark and see the ability of UMN students’ by their final assignments. We can also see to what extent their capabilities are and what can be improved and developed from their outputs and design processes,” Gierlang Bhakti Putra, an architecture lecturer at UMN, said.
Three UMN architecture students are invited to present their final assignments. They are Geo Bramanta Rahman (Application of Adaptable and Flexible Architecture in the Old Cinere Ruko Area), Timoteus Evelyn Andifa Chandra (Market Design in Tangerang’s Old Town Chinatown with an Urban Catalyst Approach), and Adrian Hannyanto (Design of and Requalification of Tangerang’s Eight Alam Sutera Market as a Healthy Market according to the 2020 Minister of Health Regulation). They are architecture students known to have graduated and chosen to be examples and present their work for this external review.
During the session, Aswin provided multiple suggestions and tips on becoming a skillful architect. “Safety, health, and comfort,” Aswin emphasized.
The most important thing in undergraduate education (architecture) is the student’s design skills. It includes knowledge of building regulations, the physics of the building, the rule of thumb, and building utilities. Aswin also emphasized the importance of universal design in architecture.
“What principles should be present when designing? There must be access for people with disabilities, and there must be brake standards that are met, access and number of toilets, lifts, and so on. This is also included in the comfort aspect,” Aswin said.

Aswin explained that students need to consider another objective aspect: safety. “As in the case of a fire, the design must be very detailed, such as if a building is above a number of cubic meters, then there must be easy access for firefighters to surround it, and so on,” Aswin shared.
Lastly, the rule of thumb, structure. Aswin said that an architect must understand the logic to make the designed structure solid, stable, and strong. They also have to know how to communicate with mechanical people, design ventilation, etc. Because we are in a tropical country, natural lighting should be maximized in terms of lighting.
Something else equally important is the environmental aspect, such as how an architect can contribute positively not to make the environment worse but better.
Giving tips on being well equipped when doing final projects, Aswin emphasized the importance of critical thinking. Students need to know and research such as the issues that need solving and how students formulate facilities and programs?
Aswin gave his appreciation and praise to the three UMN students who presented their final projects, “To UMN lecturers, I congratulate you on this. Congratulations to Geo, Evelyn, and Timothy. You’ve done quite well. Your way of thinking is correct,” Aswin praised.
