May 6, 2015After organizing several competitions, Kompas Corner made its 2nd birthday celebration even more festive with a variety of seminars hosted by top speakers in their fields such as ICT, communication and business.
The series of seminars and workshops began on Monday (4/5) which was divided into two sessions. The first session was presented by Henry MTH (General Manager of IT Daily Kompas) and Agus Ramdhani (Kompas Software and Application Manager) on the topic of Big Data. The two discussed the use of Big Data in the media business. Kompas is currently implementing Big Data in its business.
So what is Big Data? It is a term for data that cannot be processed by computers, which control ICT technology. For now, Big Data sources come from social media such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft or Telco. These data can later be processed by data scientists, who can later be used for analysis or decision making.
“Big Data is widely used by the industry for prediction analysis with various purposes, such as marketing, business. A company uses big data to gain insights for next year’s product creation. The method and how to process the data depends on the purpose, “said Agus.
In addition to business, Big Data can also be applied in the world of journalism. Usually, journalists have to take to the field first to get data from the field, analyzed can only make news. However, by using Big Data, the term data journalism gave rise. This allows data to be collected only from social media, without journalists having to take to the field, then can be done analysis and prediction of natural disasters, or others. The output itself can be graphic, interactive or analytical. In addition to data analysis, big data can also be used for business intelligence purposes.
While in the second session, Kompas Corner presented a Communication talkshow hosted by Buyung Wijaya Kusuma as a juralis in Kompas Daily as well as General Manager sport on Kompas TV. In this talkshow session Buyung told a lot about the power of new media (online media) that began to shift traditional media. With the speed of information that can be provided by online media, many people who have begun to no longer get used to looking for information through print, radio, and television.
This not only affects news content but also changes the concept of journalists as news creators. “If in traditional media, journalists have time to think about ideas before making and raising news, online media demands journalists to work effectively and efficiently. Everything becomes fast-paced because of the demands of time, “he explained.
However, Buyung added that basically the existence of traditional media cannot be completely replaced by online media. “The depth of online media in discussing news is not like print media. If the online media discusses the ongoing events, the print media discusses more about how and why an event can happen,” he said.
Kompas Corner series of activities will still take place until tomorrow Wednesday (6/5). In addition to being able to get knowledge from experts with a background in Kompas Gramedia, participants can also watch tambora photo gallery and get various other interesting doorprize.
