Discussing Media Development From Many Perspectives
September 21, 2016GFMD Elects New Head of Management
September 23, 2016Coverage of air journalism is no longer costly with the increasing popularity of drone journalism. However, the use of drones leaves some questions. Is the use of drones safe? Can the use of drones result in accidents for others? With more and more people using drones, does the public still need professional journalists?
The questions were questioned during a Drone Journalism session with a well-known speaker from Kompas Daily, Arbain Rambey at the Jakarta World Forum For Media Development (JWFMD) on Wednesday (22/9).
Although the popularity of drone use is increasing among ordinary audiences, participants and speakers agree that news coverage must be delivered by professional journalists to ensure the quality of the overall news content.
Patrick Leush, Managing Director of the Global Media Forum, said not everyone has the ability to package videos and photos into news stories that have value. Not only emphasized the production of video and content capture, journalists must understand issues related to safety and privacy in using drone journalism.
Rambey said journalists should follow regulations regarding the use of drones, especially those that focus on public privacy at large and public safety. In this case, Arbain Rambey gave an example of the event of the use of drones passing in a villa in Bali will be directly shot down because it is considered to interfere with privacy.
Therefore, Rambey and the participants agreed to invite the university to include drone journalism as part of the curriculum, especially in packing interesting stories.
Jakarta World Forum for Media Development (JWFMD) is an international event in collaboration with the Global Forum for Media Development and the Indonesian Press Council. The event was held within 3 days with hundreds of participants and practitioners from 62 countries. The event is expected to build cooperation between media executives and activists. (*)
