Tangerang – Learning with an exciting concept, fun, and unlocking new data skills at the same time is more challenging than we would like. In fact, maybe some of our fellow students are still researching where to learn data that can fulfill their needs and help prepare them for a career in the data field.
The basics of learning are very important and needed, without any exceptions. This is about understanding the basic things of use and function so that when doing the practice, there are no fatal mistakes that make us have to repeat from the beginning again.
In the world of Data Science, the activities include extracting, analysing, visualising and communicating data results in the form of verbal communication or using graphics so that the activities and processes can produce actionable data. This is where the fundamental role of Data Science is needed.
Quoted from DQLab at the Data Science event: Fundamental Class that invited Ayub Indra as Data Engineer at Kalbe Nutritionals and Data Science Mentor on July 31, 2023, explained “Introduction to Data Science” for fellow students who are preparing for a career in data.
At the opening of this fundamental class, Ayub invited participants to interact through the question, “What do you know about Data Science?”. He also explained a little understanding of data literacy through case examples. Through this interaction, we found out how much we know and understand Data Science before entering more in-depth material.
“Having good data literacy is one of the keys to being able to have a career in the data field,” Ayub said.
Furthermore, Ayub explained that in this Fundamental Data Science class, participants also learn data storytelling and become very powerful knowledge, especially for a Data Analyst who always works and is close to stakeholders, managers, and decision-makers who only need straightforward explanations. So, this data storytelling technique is beneficial in delivering information and is very important for data practitioners.
“So, stakeholders actually don’t really need to know how we process it (data) but what is important is how the information we convey does not make people confused,” Ayub explained.
Through his explanation, Ayub also gave a parable that was easy for the participants to understand about the Data Science paradigm. Data Science itself is a combination of various disciplines, especially computer science and statistics. All majors, such as statistics, certainly study the two sciences used to process data and information technology, where students are taught to use software such as Microsoft Excel.
“So for friends whose background is not originally from these two disciplines, the opportunity is very large. Because (we) have domain knowledge that we build ourselves,” said Ayub.
In the core material of this Fundamental Class, Ayub explained the intersection of Data Science, which consists of mathematical statistics, computer science, and domain/business knowledge. Data Science will not work when there are no three attributes. If we understand the business model or flow but cannot operate data processing tools, the possibility will not be balanced. Likewise, if you only master the program and domain knowledge but do not master basic mathematics, you can only be a programmer.
“We don’t need to learn the advanced level first, because it’s good at this time we learn the basics of Data Science first. There are many places to learn, one of which such as DQLab provides learning from fundamentals, especially if it is from friends from NON-IT majors. Don’t be confused, because you have to learn the fundamentals first and then go to more specific materials or advanced stages,” Ayub explained.
