LPPM UMN Beri Santunan Kepada 100 Anak Yatim Binaan GP Ansor
May 6, 2021The UMN Initiative and Facebook to Improve the Competence of Indonesian Communication Practitioners in Community Management
May 6, 2021TANGERANG – Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN) students again won a 2021 Indonesian Student Entrepreneurship (KBMI) competition grant. This provision of grants in the form of venture capital for the SafeWax idea was organized by the government under the coordination of the National Achievement Center.
The idea for SafeWax came from the church community throwing away paraffin wax which was no longer usable. Actually the wax can still be processed and still has value that can be of use to society.
This problem was captured by a group of UMN students across study programs and classes: Kevin Nicholas Tanex (Electrical Engineering, class of 2018), Nabila Amanda Azahra (Engineering Physics, class of 2018), Virino Miracle (Communication Sciences, class of 2019), Bella Auditha (Accounting, class of 2019), and Ivan Johan (Visual Communication Design, class of 2017).
Due to the absence of a suitable solution to reduce waste wax from church activities, the five students established SafeWax which is expected to have a direct impact on the environment as well as a social impact by building a mutually supportive and empowering community through educational facilities.

SafeWax is a startup that focuses on environmental sustainability. SafeWax can be categorized as a sociopreneurship engaged in the creative industry in manufacturing. By collecting waste before it is disposed of for production raw materials, SafeWax as the recipient processes wax waste into eco-friendly and sustainable products in the form of scented wax.
“Initially I was a part of the church community, but the church often threw out candles that were no longer usable. So instead of throwing it away, I asked for the wax and, for fun, processed it again and I developed it into a business idea with my group members,” said Kevin Nicholas Tanex as chairman of the SafeWax group (6/5).
Kevin explained that group members have their respective duties. Nabila takes care of the production process; Ivan and Virino take care of marketing starting from marketing, copywriting to content; and Bella manages the transaction process, finance, and inventory of tools and materials.
“Even though all members have their respective duties, they still have to understand each other at least what is being done and can help provide solutions to other members’ duties,” he continued.
Finding raw material vendors is a challenge for them. “We are looking for and collaborating with places of worship that want to be our partners and have wax waste. Then we transport it to the production site to be processed in accordance with the SafeWax’s production process procedure into eco-friendly scented candles and packaged ready to sell to the online marketplace platform,” said Kevin.
Kevin hopes that in the future SafeWax can have a wider impact on the environment and can expand members and communities for a greater impact.
